Sally never gets her man, and we will likely never see FOLLIES win a major production Tony award. It has lost Best Musical, in addition to now losing Best Musical Revival twice.

Posted: 6/11/12 at 2:09amWe shouldn't even count that last revival so let's just say it's lost the revival Tony once.

Posted: 6/11/12 at 2:15amThe first revival was terrifying. Loveland looked like a giant Hallmark Valentine's Day card come to life... and NOT in a good way.

Argh!!!! I'm gonna loose my mind. I'm shocked it lost Best Revival! And I was TeamMaxwell and TeamBurstein, but didn't think they were as much of a "lock" as Follies was for Best Revival!
I saw the entire cast pour their hearts out at the Ahmanson last night. But alas, though they didn't win a Tony for any of the acting categories or for best revival, I will always remember it as one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Congratulations Follies on finishing a wonderful run!
I'll keep an eye on what's happening in Leah Horowitz(Young Heidi) & Christian Delcroix's (Young Buddy) careers. They really impressed me, and I can't wait to see what they do next.

Posted: 6/11/12 at 3:01amI am surprised by the shock that this did not win best revival. I thought the general consensus here was that it had no chance due to the fact that it had already closed months ago and would not be touring.
On the road...

Posted: 6/11/12 at 10:28amWhile this had a truly all-star cast, Follies was one of the biggest snoozers I have ever sat through. Unless you're a theatre person, Sondheim doesn't have much appeal. Look at all of his recent revivals...I don't think a single one could be considered a hit. They are huge out of the door when they open and plummet pretty quickly. I was so excited to see Follies when it came to Briadway. With the premise of the show and the amazing cast, I didn't think I could go wrong by getting a ticket. After about ten minutes though, I was bored out of my mind. It didn't deserve Best Revival (but I saw Porgy and Bess too, and it sure didn't either). At least they walked away with three critically acclaimed (albeit I don't understand why) productions.

Eric Schaeffer is a mediocre directing talent at best. As grand as some of the performances were, this was far from the definitive "Follies". I'd even argue what sunk Roundabout's "Follies" (which I actually didn't hate) was its cheapness and star-****ing casting, Mathew Warchus was on to something interesting and potentially awesome that went unfulfilled, and I'm guessing it was because it was a Roundabout production.
Someday a modern equivalent of Hal Prince will direct this show and it will be the "Follies" of our dreams.

To quote PalJoey: Loving Follies means accepting that others don’t.
That completely floored me when I read it this morning.

It completely floored me when I realized it in 1971. I spent the next 27 years seeking out fellow Follies fans, where ever I could. There were few of us and we were far between.
As a matter of fact, I've thought it terribly odd the past few years that so many people seemed to be loving it. Once it opened at the Kennedy Center, it seemed as if it had suddenly turned into a beloved old chestnut, like Show Boat or Oklahoma or My Fair Lady.
I wonder if maybe now, it will calm back down to being loved by just us special few.
I kinda liked it better that way.

Posted: 6/11/12 at 11:20amI think that people go in thinking it'll be a sweet old chestnut and come out realizing it's not. Hence, a lot of disappointed tourists that went to the last revival.

Maybe when Audra plays Sally and Nathan Lane plays Buddy, 'Follies' might just get the awards.
Till then, we just have to be satisfied knowing 'Follies' is a great under-achiever in certsin ways.

NIGHT MUSIC was most certainly a financial hit.

Thank you Owen22 for bringing up Eric Schaeffer. I totally agree. Not only was he snubbed a Tony directorial nomination, he was also left out of the Helen Hayes nomination for Follies in DC (although I think he was nominated for Hairspray).
I will always associate him with that crap, "Glory Days".
