Aretha is a mic hog...yes, she eats those too.
She is a big ham...
God, how can I make the point come across without making her sound like a fat bitch.
She is someone who likes to be on the stage by herself. I'm more than sure she was extremely unhappy having to sing a duet - whcih is why she tried to do her own thing. And I'm more than sure Hugh was unhappy singing with a snotty "diva" (and I don't mean "diva" in good terms), which is why he trie to do his own thing. Whatever went on, Hugh's performance was ten times better than hers.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

My ears were bleeding!

I muted the TV at my friend's party, and people applauded me for doing so!
She was AWEFUL.

YES.....we just rewatched the Tony's as my partner hadn't seen it. My God was she bad........I don't think I quite realized HOW bad until the second time around.

The woman is a legend......but she did not do this well.

Main Entry: aghast -
: struck with terror, amazement, or horror

I believe this covers the reaction of everyone in the room we were watching it with.

Agreed...I was expecting something at least decent (though I would have given another minute to each of the performances)but Aretha (whom I love) was totally awful. She was very raspy, and obviously struggling. I think that was this year's Idina.

She may be a legend, but that doesn't take away the fact that she is an upstaging, nasty, thinks she's better than everyone else ham!

Was she even at the rehearsals? She is notoriuos for not rehearsing if things aren't going her way.

NO, she was not at rehearsals. In fact, the girl who did rehearse (for Hugh's benefit) was better for that song.

I was glad she didn't show up for rehearsals. I could not listen to that twice in one day.

I think Aretha should have been on a turn table with a bright light on her and she could have been the disco ball for the number!!! Then bring in people that know the 5 words of the song. Imagine how wonderful Sondheim felt for 75th Bday tribute!!!

I think Sondheim probably crapped in his pants when she opened her mouth.

It's not so much that her voice was bad, she was just way out of her element. She's sounds great when she sings jazz and R&B, but Sunday night, she was trying to sing ligit (bordering on operatic) musical theatre. It simply did not fit her voice.

yeah she didn't sound that great. but she's old...I mean her voice isn't gonna be the same as it was say...20 years ago.

But even, say, Patty LaBelle who is younger than Aretha. She is amazing; but she too would be out of place doing a song like that (especially as a duet).

What next? Are we gonna have Liza Minnelli and Michael Jackson together next year?

Why isn't Mary Bond Davis doing the movie version of Hairspray? It's not like she hasn't been in movies.
