"If Judy had lived and the movie could have been made with in a few years of Follies opening, she'd have been Carlotta, no question."
Phyllis---I saw Jim Bailey sing it as Judy at the Cinegrill in Hollywood, and while it's not exactly the same, it sure proves your point.
Jim as Judy: "I'm Still Here."

Jim Bailey is incredible at what he does. I've seen him perform three times and each time it's been transcendent...
Idina as WHO? Are you kidding me? Why in the world is her name mentioned for anything anymore? She's a very, very lucky performer who's been in a few well-known shows, gotten a Tony and is continuing to ride a success that's been eclipsed for quite awhile now.
Dear Idina Menzel: It ain't what you did for us in Wicked, it's what you're doing for us now. I'm waiting. I've BEEN waiting.
Garland as Rose would have been dreamy. I can see Bette Midler stepping back into the role, but she'd need to work on her voice (a lot) to really nail it.
What I'd really love to see someday is Lillias White as Rose. I've heard her sing Roses Turn live and it was one of the most thrilling things I've ever heard. She's just simply the cat's pajamas.

Midler's Rose feels as if it was being shot on stage, in front of a live audience, and she was playing to the rafters. Of course the problem being that it was neither of those things, so it naturally comes across as very exaggerated and over the top. However, since it was my first exposure to the show back in the day I do hold a soft spot for it in my heart.
Now, I love GYPSY but lately I've started to feel that it is being overpraised. Yes it is good (very) but there are other more worthy properties for remake. I also think that for it to be acceptable for todays film audience it would have to have considerable rewrites and we all know who would stop that from happening, don't we?
Judy Garland in Valley of the Dolls would have been real irony. Carlotta in Follies- very interesting.
So the debate is about Gypsy that the film was a.) fine and doesn't need the remake and b.) too overpraised, unworthy of remake and c.) two mediocre adaptations to film whether dubbed or not so third time's the charm. A and B basically go to the same conclusions to a big 'no' for remake.
alterego- Well Arthur did stop it from happening.
I am hoping that the Damn Yankees remake does happen but I completely want a new casting change from who is attached not to mention I want Marshall directing.
I would have loved to see a Marshall-directed GYPSY, there are terrible versions out there who have a straight musical approach to it, so why not have Marshall come at it with a different approach and style? I love Marshall's concept and I think he makes the shows work for film, and I think he can shoot a musical number like few can.
I'm not sure Catherine Z. Jones is the most fit person to play Rose. She's almost too classy. I'd much prefer someone like Toni Collette, even if she is not a name or an Oscar winner like Jones.
