I predict reviews for this will be all over the map. This has certainly been quite the season for divisive shows; and I think thats a great thing. Be bold or go home!
“I knew who I was this morning, but I've changed a few times since then.”
"Even with the parts that didn't work for me, I was fascinated by the story and an era of theatre I know nothing about (and will now be diving into)."
And I think, for all its flaws, that's the ultimate success of the show. Without it, how many people would have even known this existed. It's a reclamation of the musical form as it was formed by black artistry, and I'm glad George C. Wolfe has brought it out into the open.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
