She and Jessica both look awful in the pictures posted on the main page. And is that supposed to be a dress? It looks like she forgot to put on a pair of pants.
There is actually a longer video on a site I will not name. Ashlee Simpson Chicago. Another interview with much more of hre perfmance. Very impressive.
I can't find that video on that "site". What did you search under?
It's a nice video.
But why does she keep saying she's on Broadway?
She's not. She's in the West End.
Has no one told her?
Ashlee Simpson Chicago. Yea Foa agreed. But I was just shocked of how good I thought she was.
She's nothing revolutionary.
But I've definitely seen a lot worse.
By rising to the task she's gained some respect in my book.
Well I didnt expect her to be revolutionary. But like I said she was pleasantly good. Definetly not one of the worst.
Is it JUST me, or does Velma look like she could be her mother in most of those pictures?
It's not just you.
"But why does she keep saying she's on Broadway?"
Oh, it's so much worse than that (he tries desperately to damp down the urge to be catty).
She keeps saying "Broadways". She calls musicals "Broadways." She says "I was offered the chance to do several Broadways."
Honest to God, there should be a performing license.
IT'S CALLED MUSICAL THEATRE, LADY, NOT BROADWAYS!!!!!
You know that guy who makes broadways wanted me to do broadways (with a lower case B)?
Okay, now I have sat through all four hou-- er-- minutes and nine seconds and I just have one question: How SERIOUSLY was Melanie Griffith? Was she better/worse than this? This poor woman looks like the star of the Bath Light Civic Opera production of Chicago. Is this the standard in the show now on Broadway (I only saw it with Bebe and Anne). Even the chorus boys sound horrid. Is this the current state of the show in NY?

Melanie Griffith was horrible and never should have played Roxie. She ruined the show for me.

Ah! Amra-Faye was in Chicago when I saw it in March. That's cool to see she's working with Ashlee now. I can't wait to read the reviews.

there's also an article and video up at mtv.com/news but i think it's mostly the same clips that everyone has seen
How on earth are people saying she's bad?
As much fun as I thought it would be to make fun of her, I think she looks and sounds TERRIFIC. I'm not an easy sell and I'm not starstruck (Ben Brantley) and I truly think that she has risen to the occasion and proven herself. It's possible that her acting is horrendous, but from what's there, I would pay good money to see her performance.
And do not even think for a split second that Melanie Griffith's performance was anything like that. Melanie's performance in CHICAGO was a rare, rare thing. It was the first and only time I have seen someone fall flat on their face on stage. She ruined the show in general, but she also entertained me the entire time because I was laughing SO HARD. I made an audio bootleg of her in it just so I could amuse myself after. Rarely on key, barely dancing, and she NEVER acted. What's more, during the "Hot Honey Rag," she did a crooked cartwheel and went right into the gold and silver fringe curtain, completely disappearing on the other side.
The day of her final performance, I attended Antonio/Chita/Jane's final performance in NINE that afternoon then saw Melanie's final performance across the street that evening. I was standing next to Barry Weissler and Anne Reinking. The look on Anne Reinking's face was completely and utterly priceless.
Munk, I have admired many of your postings but, seriously, are we looking at the same clip? Are we (sorry but it's necessary) both watching www.y*****e.com/watch?v=1U-7jJzzvOE
Honestly, she doesn't hit a single "Fosse Point" in her dancing. She looks like someone taught it to her that day. Her hands are limp, she never finishes an extention, she spins like a shopgirl turning to get another size dress. She's just so obviously and utterly out-of-her depth. This is serious stuff. This is like putting Phoebe from Friends in as the principal ballerina at The Met. She has no idea WHY she is doing WHAT she is doing.
It just looks like dressup time, dance-wise.
Then the singing. She doesn't do anything but throw out a streamofwordsthatallrunintogether. There's no shape to the lyrics.
At one point, she flubs a line and turns back to the band (which is EXACTLY what she did on Saturday Night Live). And then, in what is supposed to be a polished run-through, she never elevates the performance above what she did when she flubbed it.
Where is the performance? At 60 pounds per seat, I want Fosse, or at least Fosse-like, not Fosse-lite or Fosse-less.
THAT I can see at The Bath Civic Light Opera.
well i expected her to sound AWFUL and I think her voice is pleasant for the role. She's never done "broadways" shows before so I think in time she will be more comfortable, all in all, from those clips I think she's got a career there if people can get over the fact that she's "Ashlee Simpson"
IT'S CALLED MUSICAL THEATRE, LADY, NOT BROADWAYS!!!!!
Will you come and explain this to my grandmother!! Ugh!
Your grandmother is Ashlee Simpson???? Wow, now THAT would earn Ashlee some respect!

wow love that picture that u posted, munkustrap178! she looks very cute. that picture of her looks almost unrecognizable from her usual self.
You Tube IS the "site that cannot be named."
From IMDB's news section in an article titled "Ashlee Simpson Triumphs in 'Chicago'":
Ashlee Simpson, who experienced a near career-wrecking debacle in 2004 when she was caught lip-syncing her supposedly live performance on NBC's Saturday Night Live, may have successfully revived her career -- on London's West End. Debuting Monday night as Roxie Hart in a production of the musical Chicago, Simpson received a huge ovation from the audience, and on Tuesday from reviewers, who called her performance "flawless" and "impressive." Meanwhile, it was announced that Jimmy Kimmel, who opened the 2004 American Music Awards by remarking, "We're here to celebrate the music and the performers who sing and/or lip-sync it," will return as host this year.
Apparently the reviews are glowing.
Ashlee Really Sings Live!
