Audition question....

hey guys, I am auditioning for the role of Oliver and I would love some suggestions for an audition song. I want something that shows off my range (My voice is unchanged so songs written for women are ok) Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

re: Audition question....

I try to tell myself that the posters on BWW aren't really as young as some say, but wow. Oliver. Ok...

When I was your age I used Round-Shouldered Man from The Secret Garden. It's charming, tells a little story, and covers a nice range for the unchanged male voice.

that's odd, Ourtime, he got the same suggestion in Off Topic. Apparently he's played Colin but doesn't want to repeat that repertoire. Is your handle from MERRILY?

Yes, as a matter of fact. One of my favorites. Also coincidentally lines up with one of my favorite movie speeches (Mikey's "it's our time down here" bit from Goonies).

TheatreFreak (an unfortunate handle, really you should change it):
Don't do dreary songs from THE SECRET GARDEN. You'll be much better off doing songs like ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE from SEUSSICAL or
MY PA (change the lyric to MY MA) from THE YEARLING or NEVER-NEVER LAND from PETER PAN or MAMA, A RAINBOW from MINNIE'S BOYS or I WANT TO KNOW from BIG. Good luck.

re: Audition question....

I love that MINNIE'S BOYS score. Funny, in the other thread, I almost suggested "Alone in the Universe" but was afraid it was too poppy. It depends on how the Musical Director and Director "hear" their Oliver singing, I guess. As a former Oliver, it's cool to think about what songs fit his "type" now....I also love "Never Never Land", and there's a lot of Disney songs that would work, including the similar "Second Star to the Right"....

re: Audition question....

TheatreFreak has been my screen name since I was like.... 8 so I kinda like to stick with it. But yeah I am young guys, but I assure you that I am really mature for my age and I absolutely live, sleep, and breathe theatre.

as for the songs, I kinda like the idea of using Alone in the Universe from Seussical. Any more suggestions?

re: Audition question....

do you work with a voice teacher? if you do, they may be able to help you develop "Universe" with both a contemporary B'way sound and a more pure legit sound...I guess the role could work with either take on the vocals.

re: Audition question....

Actually I have an amazing voice teacher who is both classically trained and knows the broadway style too. Whatever song I end up picking, she an I will work on it.

re: Audition question....

I've never heard Oliver (the role) sung with the kind of sound that typical JoJo's use, but I guess it could be...depends on what the show's director and musical director have in mind.

re: Audition question....

I actually am a more of an Oliver type than a JoJo type. I was just thinking of using that song, but the more I think about it, the more i think I should use a song more like the feel of the show

Alone in the Universe - from Sussical

It is a great fun song, that will show off your range well! :)
