So I'm auditioning for Hairspray on July 20th, just a community production. I'm going for Penny Pingleton......any idea what kind of audition song I should use for this? Thanks guys!

something upbeat but not from the show. she's a ditsy character so have fun with whatever song you pick! but definatly something upbeat and shows your range.

I was gonna do "Gimme Gimme" from "Thoroughly Modern Millie".....think that would be ok? It's my top audition song....

That's probably fine since she doesn't sing THAT that much anyway. She has part of "Mama..." and "Without Love" (there may be something else, but I don't remember it). So I really think you'll be fine with that. I also know that the original Penny ended up playing Audrey in Little Shop, so you could probably sing Suddenly Seymour as well. But I think you're fine.

I don't think doing "Gimme Gimme" is a good idea. It doesn't capture any essence of the character you are auditioning for and isn't in the style of the music that the show is in. Doing "Suddenly Seymour" is closer to what you want to do, but I would keep searching. If I think of anything I'll get back to you.

So you think I should do Suddenly Seymour? But then they'd be thinking that I would be capturing Kerry Butler's Audrey from LSOH...I wouldn't be making a song my own.....it's a good idea and I can see where you're coming from.....I'll have to consult my voice teacher about it.

"they" don't likely know those things.

However, Penny is comedic, and I'd pick something in that genre.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I strongly recommend 'Shy' from Once Upon A Mattress. Here's an old clip of Carol Burnett:

Shy is probably good too. I'm trying to think of anything else comedic...

You maybe should think about preparing a monologue from Medea. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

I don't think it requires a monologue, Kalimba but I'll have to look that up. I'll keep ya updated with how it went
