It was officially announced last night at the launch of the Melbourne Theatre Company's 2009 Season that August: Osage County would be one of their bigger undertakings for the season.
Very very excited that August is making it overseas, and especially finding a brilliant home at the MTC under the direction of the incomparable Simon Phillips and headed by Robyn Nevin (The Year of Magical Thinking at STC and MTC for 09) and Jane Menelaus.
Brilliant!
MTC AUGUST 2009
MTC have a wonderful season next year. Looking forward to seeing August.

I've already been planning my interstate trip to see Cate Blanchette in Streetcar, I don't know if my poor uni student bank account can handle this trip too!
noplain, if it turns out performances half as good as those in the OBC - theny any sacrifice needn't be seen as too drastic. it is spoken-word theatre at its most poignant and electric
I would take August over Cate in Streetcar!

Ugh, this is getting harder and harder. It doesn't play over my holidays at all, and I work on Saturdays so I don't know if I'd be able to make it. I just hope it will come here soon, I guess.
Cate in Streetcar is something that will only ever happen once, and that has been one of my favourite plays for years. I know there will be other productions of A:OC, so I think unless the cast is brilliant I'll have to sit it out.
I think this production might be part of STC 2010 season, they seem to swap back and forth. MTC are doing STC's production of Magical Thinking this year, so there is a very good chamce of that.
I am looking forward to The War Of The Roses with Cate in Jan, for the Sydney Festival.
I agree - providing all goes well with MTC in 2009, STC would snap it up in a second. So go see Cate
Cate should just play Barbara in this production. Actually, another Australian actress who I think would make a brilliant Barbara is Toni Collette, she should definitely do it.
It's more likely that Jane Menelaus, or Robyn Nevin will play Barbara.
I actually can't really see it transferring well to Australian audiences.
I myself enjoyed it when I saw it in New York but whilst I was watching it my overall feeling was that it wouldn't work as well here.
Excited nonetheless.
I'm excited too!
Was very excited to read it in the paper.
And some of the shows from the season are in the new theatre too, very exciting!
My understanding is that Robyn Nevin is playing Beverley. According to the subscriber brochure, she's playing "the matriarch".
I'm not particularly looking forward to this. I would hardly call Simon Phillips incomparable, I find MTC's plays to be rarely more than "fine". A:OC blew me away when I saw it in NYC and I think MTC will manage, as they often do, to catch about 40% of that energy and authenticity. Which, admittedly, will probably still make for a strong production. But nothing that makes me really excited. Call me cynical.
