"Autographed Hounds of Broadway" Auction to Help Homeless Pets in NYC

Shubert Alley, between 44th and 45th Streets, just west of Broadway, New York City

Pre-bids are now being accepted at Christofle, 680 Madison Avenue, New York City.

Each year at Broadway Barks, one-of-a-kind stuffed dogs that are signed by the casts (and in some cases, decorated by the wardrobe departments) of some of Broadway's hottest shows are auctioned to raise money for the Picasso Veterinary Fund of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals.

Here's your opportunity to own an Autographed Hound of Broadway from among some of Broadway's most popular shows and at the same time help NYC's homeless animals! Some of the 20 shows represented are All My Sons, Billy Elliott, Blithe Spirit, Equus, Hair, Hairspray, 9 to 5, South Pacific, West Side Story, and more. There is also a special hound honoring Broadway Barks, signed by founders Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore.

How Does This Auction Help Animals?

The Picasso Veterinary Fund, founded by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore in 2003 and administered by the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, pays for extraordinary medical care for sick and injured dogs and cats that come in to Animal Care & Control of NYC (A&C) and are transferred to other Mayor's Alliance Participating Organizations ? shelters and rescue groups ? that find them new homes. These are animals who, without the aid of the Fund, would likely be euthanized because the resources to care for them simply aren't there.

How Do I Bid on the Hounds?

The Autographed Hounds of Broadway will go on display beginning Friday, June 26, at the Christofle boutique at 680 Madison Avenue. Pre-bids will be accepted at the store until July 10. (Later in the month, Christofle will host two special shopping days, when it will donate 15% of the store's sales to the Picasso Veterinary Fund.)

Bidding will continue at Broadway Barks on July 11 beginning at 3:30 p.m., where final bids will be accepted in the silent auction.

Bids will start at $150.00. Payment may be made by check, cash, or credit card.

Hair

Hair, the Tony Award-winning musical for Best Musical Revival of 2009, is playing to standing room only crowds each day at the Hirschfeld Theatre. This show's hound has been signed by stars Gavin Creel, Sasha Allen, Allison Case, Casssie Levy, Darius Nichols, Bryce Ryness, Kacie Sheik, Will Swenson, and the rest of the talented cast. It also comes with its own wig, fringed vest, flower power patch, "love" necklace, and headband designed by the talented wardrobe staff: John A. Robelen III, Ginger Blake, and Danny Koye. This great little dog named Claude will "Let the Sunshine In" at your house if you are the lucky winning bidder.

Billy Elliot

The huge cast of the award-winning Billy Elliot signed this Hound of Broadway and wardrobe supervisor, Terri Purcell, designed a dog-sized tutu for the canine to wear. He looks like he could join the entire ensemble for their nightly curtain call. Signed by Tony Award winners David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, Kiril Kulish, and Gregory Jbara, plus Carole Shelley, Santino Fontana, Haydn Gwynne, and over twenty other cast members of this hit show. He misses his talented family at the Imperial Theatre and now he needs a new family to love him. His name is Electricity.

South Pacific

"Some enchanted evenings" can be spent with your new little friend from South Pacific. Dressed by James Nadeaux in the wardrobe department in a grass skirt and lei, she is a beautiful little pooch. Signed by Tony winner Paulo Szot, Danny Burstein, Laura Osnes, Loretta Ables Sayre, and the huge company of the award-winning show. Don't go home singing "This Nearly Was Mine." The highest bidder takes her home. Her name is Nellie.

Equus

The ever-popular Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, and Tony winner Richard Griffiths signed this dog before Equus ended its limited run in February of this year. It was also signed by Lorenzo Pisoni, who played the young horseman and Nugget. This was Daniel's Broadway debut and will be a very unique and collectible dog to own. His name is Equus.

The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera hound is signed by Howard McGillin, Broadway's record-breaking Phantom, having performed the role over 2,400 times! In addition, Jennifer Hope Wills, Ryan Silverman, George Lee Andrews, David Cryer, Patricia Phillips, and dozens of others from the cast have signed this exquisite dog. The dog has been dressed by Billy Hipkins and Margie Marchionni with a wig by Leone Gagliardi. "All I Ask of You" is to make a bid, and you can take this "Angel of Music" to her new home. Her name is Christine.

Wicked

The wonderful Wicked dog looks like she should be walking right through Emerald City, giving Toto a run for his money. Signed by Nicole Parker, Alli Mauzey, Kevin Kern, Alex Brightman, Cristy Candler, Timothy Britten Parker, and the other talented cast members of this company, this is a special pooch. Wardrobe designers Lindsay Northen and Barbara Rosenthal have created the added touches, including collar and glasses. You could go "Dancing Through Life" with this wickedly dashing dog named Tina , if you are the lucky winner.

Gypsy

Patti LuPone, Boyd Gaines, and Laura Benanti, the three Tony-winning actors in a musical of 2008, signed this dog along with the rest of the cast of Gypsy. Ms. LuPone's performance was touted as one of the greatest theatrical roles ever presented on Broadway. "Everything's Coming up Roses" if you win the bid on this unique dog. Her name is Gypsy.

Spamalot

The popular Tony-winning Spamalot ran for several years on Broadway, ending its run with popular singer Clay Aiken, who signed this dog along with the full cast before the show closed on January 11, 2009. Even though Spamalot has left us, this Hound of Broadway is shouting "I'M NOT DEAD YET!" as he waits for a new home. His name is Monty.

Blithe Spirit

Meet Madame Barcati from Blithe Spirit. She is dressed just like her owner, the magnificent, legendary, five-time Tony Award-winning actress, Angela Lansbury. In addition to being signed by Ms. Lansbury, Madame Barcati is also signed by Rupert Everett, Christine Ebersole, Jayne Atkinson, Deborah Rush, Simon Jones, and Susan Louise O'Connor. This dog is hard to resist, and for those who are huge Angela Lansbury fans ? you don't want to miss out on bidding on this charismatic canine cutie. This great new Broadway production has 16 new songs composed by Dolly Parton. The 9 to 5 dog has been signed by stars Allison Janney, Stephanie J. Block, Megan Hilty, Marc Kudisch, Kathy Fitzgerald, Andy Karl, and Dolly Parton, plus the entire Broadway cast. She may have been theirs from 9 to 5 at the theatre, but she is looking for a great new home 24/7. Her name is Dolly.

West Side Story

This wonderful revival of the 1957 groundbreaking musical West Side Story has cheering audiences on their feet every night at the Palace Theatre. Scott Westervelt in the wardrobe department has added an amazing collar with "Jets" and "Sharks" printed on it with jeweled studs. The same jewels adorn the eyes and nose of the dog, along with a bright pink tongue that was added. If this dog could talk, she would definitely be singing "I Feel Pretty"! She is signed by the leads, Matt Cavenaugh, Josefina Scaglione, Karen Olivo, Cody Green, George Akram, and Curtis Holbrook, along with the rest of the huge cast. Her name is Maria.

Music in the Air

This special run of the Encores series at City Center this winter was a popular hit due to the outstanding cast. The Music in the Air dog has been signed by the great Kristin Chenoweth, David Schramm (from TV's Wings), Douglas Sills (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Tom Robbins, David Berman (Musical Director), and Ryan Silverman (The Phantom of the Opera). Her name is Kristin.

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid dog is dressed in a spectacular outfit created by Paul Riner. From the top of his hat to the tip of his tail, he is a magical little canine. He is signed by Faith Prince, Drew Seeley, Norm Lewis, Chelsea Morgan Stock, Rogelio Douglas, Jr., and dozens of cast members. The show will be closing at the end of the summer, so this will be your last chance to own a The Little Mermaid original. Don't let this dog be "Beyond your Wildest Dreams." Make him "Part of Your World" by bidding and winning The Little Mermaid Dog, whose name is Sebastian.

Speed-the-Plow

The hound from this limited run of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow has been signed by popular Broadway stars Raul Esparza, TV star Elisabeth Moss, Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz, and the great William H. Macy. Original star Jeremy Piven had to leave the cast early, but was replaced by the wonderful Mr. Butz and Mr. Macy through the end of the run. This hound's name is Raul.

God of Carnage

This limited run show's hound has been signed by the entire cast of God of Carnage, including the great James Gandolfini, Hope Davis, Jeff Daniels, and Marcia Gay Harden. Marcia's daughter even added a hand-drawn collar, freckles, and a design to his tail. She named him Carnage! He certainly had a great foster home with these talented actors, but now he is ready for his "forever home."

We're hoping to add an online bidding option next year. This year, though, everyone should come to Broadway Barks on Saturday to see the stars with all of the sweet adoptable pets and check out the great items available in the silent auction. It promises to be a fun, memorable day again this year!

I totally love the Blithe Spirit dog (Madame Barcati), too. The dress, hat, and wig that match Angela Lansbury's costume are absolutely amazing!

I'll pass along the name suggestion for the Gypsy dog.

Exit the King

This boldly signed dog comes from a star-studded cast of Exit the King, which just ended its run in June. Oscar winners Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandon join the multi-talented Andrea Martin, Lauren Ambrose, Brian Hutchison, and William Sadler. Now Mr. Rush can add a new shelf to his home for all the awards he has won this theatre season for his performance as King Berenger. Do not "exit" our auction without bidding on this precious pooch. His name is Geoffrey.

Hairspray

The original stars of Hairspray, Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur, signed this dog along with Karen Mason, Tevin Campbell, Charlotte Crossley, Kate Loprest, Kevin Meaney, and a least another dozen members of the cast of this hit Tony-winning show, which closed in early January. A great dog! Her name is Tracy.
