Posted: 2/20/05 at 2:21amLOL...I didn't give away the whole plot...you did...I was just correcting you because one of your facts was wrong. EVERYTHING gets criticized...you have to learn to deal with it. I love Avenue Q a great deal and am friends with a number of the cast members but I appreciate and respect others opinions. I don't care how someone thinks they relate to a certain character...that doesn't mean you are part of the show. Lots of people can relate to the characters. You're getting so hyped up and I agree you have to calm down. Updated On: 2/20/05 at 02:21 AM

How can it "Suck to be {insert name of show}"?
That makes no sense.
The show itself has no feelings. Is not living. Cannot breathe or think. Therefore it can not Do anything that requires action, such as "sucking to be," besides existing and being performed or reviewed or watched.
You can say 'Wicked sucks' or more appropriately, 'I don't like Wicked,' but 'Wicked' is what it is and it couldn't be anything else becuase of what it is. So it cannot suck to be it.
It can suck to be the actors in it, or the creator of it, or the designers of it, or the audience of it, I guess.
But a show cannot 'suck to be.' It can merely 'suck.'
La-la Miss Saigon la-la Miss Saigon.

Thanks for proofing my point, Raggy q Poo. You've given away some of the PLOT. You see? Now where's O.J. Maybe YOU can argue with him that Avenue Q doesn't have a plot, because I don't seem to be getting through to him. I think you just proved it.
I RUV AVENUE Q'S PLOT!

Why I am furthering my point is beyond me because no matter what I say won't matter but whatever...I'm gonna write it anyway.
From: Dictionary.com
Plot: The pattern of events or main story in a narrative or drama.
Theme: A topic of discourse or discussion.
A plot means that the same subject is going on through the whole show. A plot means that someone is trying to achieve something in the end. To take a very random example- I am doing a monolouge called "Laughing Wild" by Christopher Durang. The plot in the story is that the girl wants symapthy and throughout the whole things she is telling how frustrated things make her by going through the happenings of her day. She is using tactics to achieve her goal of being understood and to be given sympathy.
A theme means a topic of discussion. This is what Avenue Q portrays. They don't stay on one subject the whole time. They move from topic to topic (hence the songs) - Sucks to be me = life sucks (1 topic) -If you were Gay = Showing that being gay isn't 'wrong' (topic 2) -Purpose = trying to find meaning for your life (topic 3) -Everyone's a little bit racist = we all have our own prejudces (topic 4) -Internet is for Porn = How people see things as for differnt uses (topic 5) -Mix Tape = relationships (topic 6)
Need I continue?
And I just asked the question to a friend who is in theater at CMU. When I asked him if it was a theme or a plot he said "THEME BY FAR BECAUSE THERE IS NO CLIMAX WHATSOEVER." Then he went on explaining it but there's no point in posting it here...

ooh, well if your friend from theater at CUM has spoken, I guess that settles it, doesn't it. NOOOO. your friend isn't the judge off all things theater just because he hates Avenue Q and thinks it doesn't climax. I think the audiences should decide forr themselves, not have to ask some college frehsman studying theater who doesn't know what he's talking about.
And thanks for looking up the dictionary definitsion of plot, I could have done that myself, and anyway it doesn't prove anything! YES, a plot is a narrative or drama, just like their is in Avenue Q, a narrative or drama, a PLOT. Just because you tell me what a plot is doesn't change the fact that Avenue Q's plot is awesome. you can look up in a dictionary what a musical is too but that doesn't prove that Avenue or Wicked isn't a musical. who cares what some stupid college kid thinks just because he's in theater. I'm in theater too, the Booth theater, I've seen Avenue Q 6 times and it's the best. I think that the narrative or drama about Kate and Princeton is really interesting. It doesn't have any discourse or discussion.
Thanks

Well, hey there little Miss Know Everything. If you happened to read the dictionary definitions and then my explanation I would think you would understand. Maybe some comprehension lessons would work.
As for my friend at CMU; no, once he has spoken not everything is settled nor did I say it was. It was his own opinion which happened to be the same as mine and I had not told him or influenced him in any way. Now, please understand that neither my friend nor I hate Avenue Q...in fact, we love it. You do not know how many times we've seen it nor do you if we have more 'backround information.' But really, that doesn't matter. Do you think seeing it more time makes you better or more of a fan? No- it doesn't...sorry to burst your bubble. As for saying that he is a college freshman studying theater and doesn't know what he is talking about, just made your level of intelligence dramatically drop. First of all, he is not a freshman, so there is where you are wrong in the first place...don't assume things- It makes you look like an a$$. Secondly, he does know what he is talking about despite what you believe.
3rd of all, you're quote of "who cares what some stupid college kid thinks just because he's in theater."
If indeed you were refering to him, (which you probably were since there was not a discussion of anyone else), that is just wrong on so many levels. Do you realize what it takes to get into CMU? If you are calling him a stupid college kid, I couldn't even imagine what you are. He is not a kid and he also is not stupid. I wish that you could talk to him someday and then leave and tell me that you understood everything he was telling you about. He is WAY smarter than I an even you (believe it or not). Tell me your grade on the SAT's and then I'll tell you his and then tell me that he is stupid....go ahead and try it. And if you don't want to base it on SAT's, just go and have a conversation with him and use intelligent words like he uses and walk out of there with a pure understanding of everything he said. I would even give you his SN but I would be way too embaressed for him to know that I talk to such a person.
.... People these days....

oh please. We've all gone to college. just because he's a college kid in theater doens't suddenly mean he knows what he's talking about ESPECIALLY IF HE'S TRYING TO SAY AVENUE Q DOESN'T HAVE A PLOT. oh please. I apologize if you thought I was assuming he was stupid based on him being in college. no not at all. I assumed he was stupid based on what you said he said. Avenue Q does have a plot and a very compellling one. that's all I'm trying to say. no need to make this into a personal battle, Raggedy.
and yes, by the way I do think seeing a show over and over demonstrating your devotion to it and spendring a lot of money there to help hte show run longer does show that you're a bigger fan than someone who didn't. I saw it 7 times because I LOVE it so much. Sorry you can think you love it just as much but only saw it once but I disagree and its just your opinion anyway so we'll just have to agree to disagree okay?
ask your stupid college friend how many times he saw it.
and by the way yes I did go to college. thank you for assuming I didn't. you're the one who shouldn't make sassumptions about people.

If you are telling me the more times you see it, the more of a fan you are; you have your priorities backward. TOTALLY WRONG! first off all, I have seen it 4 times and I am a HUGE fan of the show but that doesn't mean I am more of a fan than those who also LOVE it and can't get a chance to see it for carious reasons such as living too far away. You maybe be fortunate enough to have the money and live close enough to see it many times. Thats good for you but I am sure if alot of people had that way of life- they'd also go see it alot. There are a ton of people who live outside of the USA, I even know one in Holland, that is Avenue Q obsessed and I send her Q things all the time and clips off the computer. Just because she hasn't seen it, doesn't make her less of a fan! You are just being a pure egocentric b*tch if you think the more times you see it, the more you are a fan.
You do not know my friend- you do not know how smart he is, you do not know anything about him so to make any such judgements is wrong. And I never said you didn't go to college but it does sure seem like you are quite young and immature but whatever. If you went to college, good for you- maybe they forgot to teach you some stuff.
I refuse to go any further with this conversation. It's been ridiculous from the beginning. I give up arguing with people who hold a stand and refuse to budge because they are too stubborn to admit they are wrong.
And it's ok to agree to disagree, but to assume things and be attacked over others opinions is not ok.
I call quits to arguing over this for my own sanity....

Posted: 2/20/05 at 11:38amwow. . this thread has drifted so far from its original question which i don't even remember anymore after reading all this plot vs no plot stuff. i just wanted to respond to an earlier post about whether or not the puppets go to the rear mezzanine during The Money Song. They answer is yes, they do. When i went to go see it last year, my little brother and I were in the rear mezzanine and one of the puppets (Nicky) came up to us. It was actually kind of funny, because the puppeteer saw how young my brother was and just for some fun, started grabbing my brother's backpack and pretended to be stealing w/ so it was like Nicky and my brother were fighting over the bag. Now that i think about it, i think it was Barret Foa who was puppeting Nicky (not in the show, just up in the mezzanine). I'm not exactly sure because I didn't know who he was back then That was pretty cool of him, it made my brother's day.

Quick Points:
1. Codine, why do you assume that having a theme rather than a plot is a bad thing?
2. I think you need to calm down a little bit.
3. Don't respond to this by saying everyone else needs to calm down or that OJ needs to calm down, just simmer down no need to get upset.
4. I understand Q is your favorite show almost everyone on this board has a show that they consider their favorite and is defensive of (mine happens to be Rent), but it takes all kinds. This community has varied tastes, i.e. Most here hate Brooklyn (note munk's avatar), but Tiny-Toon is very defensive of it. That said respect everyone else's opinions. It's okay if OJ doesn't like Q, just like I am sure you don't like everything that he does.
p.s. It doesn't matter if it has a plot or not, most still consider it an amazingly enjoyable show.

Thank you Cages or Wings. Someone who actually makes sense here. Also, I just want to say that I never said I disliked "Avenue Q." I really enjoy the cast recording, and I'm looking forward to seeing it in the near future. If you go back and read my original post on this thread, it may shed some light on what all this nonsense was/is about. In any event, thank you.

First off, Auntie Codine, just look at your icon and then look at OrdifaggyJukebox's. He looks like a young version of the lead singer of Harvey Danger, but with an extra helping of gay(tm)! Unless he's a girl, in which case he's a future one of those big large lesbians.
Secondly Codine, all of us gay boys on this site have been your boyfriends for years, even though many of us are also your nephews and your sons and your mothers. But that's okay because that is the kind of family we are here. Except for SubparJerkoff there. Didn't artfag glass frames go out in like 1997?
OMG! I just looked back and saw that he signs his things "Vincent!" This is just like It's Pat!
