They offer, but I don't think they actually expect you to pay. They have pre-planted things in them for the stage, and the hat doesn't get to everyone.

If they get close to you, you can put things in the hat if you like. I hear any money goes to Broadway Cares and John Tartaglia collects any phone numbers and posts them backstage.... re: Avenue Q question Actually I don't know if he does that, but HE SHOULD.

On the "on the boards" radio show he says that he sees a lot of metro cards and things like that. I hope when i see it in june, i will sit in the orchestra and get to put something in! =D

I was sitting in rush seats, Natalie was dancing right in front of me holding a hat practically in front of my nose...I had no idea that was going to happen so I didn't have anything ready, haha. (This may also have had something to do with the fact that my shirt had Cookie Monster on it.)

Hey Babs!
In the program (near where the listing of theatre workers, crew, etc is) it says that any money collected will be donated to Broadway Cares/EFA!
And when I saw the show, John pulled out a metro card. I guess they get a lot of them!

If they get the chance, somebody should put a condom in there! I would love to hear what they would say about that!

"somebody should put a condom in there"
Someone did already. John Tartaglia mentioned it in ON THE BOARDS.

They do pass the hat around the mezz/balcony as well. the understudies come out with alternate puppets and "pass the hat" .....but....those hats don't end up back on stage, so if you put something funny in there....they won't pull it out on stage since those puppets just go straight backstage....hmmm did that make sense?

Here I'll paraphrase for you

"Only put funny stuff in the hat when you're sitting in the orchestra"

From the two times I have seen the show, I can tell you John Tartaglia comes down the aisle to row F, on the even side. Adorable!

Alright if you're sitting in the theater and facing the stage...

Jen and Nicky will have the center aisle, left orchestra
John will have center aisle, further back and usually on the right hand side
Natalie stays on stage
Jordan has the right side aisle near the wall
Ann has the left side aisle near the wall

And no matter what you put in the hat they're not going to pull it out onstage. They only ever pull out the Metro Card.

And, why not just actually give money? It does go to BC/EFA so that's a good cause.

And hang on, when did you win the discus?
