B&W/Colour playbills

Posted: 11/22/09 at 5:11pmWhile we're on the Playbill subject - does anyone know how to determine if a show/theatre has a Playbill (the actual Playbill magazine with the yellow logo) or if they give you something else? For example, I saw 2 different shows at the Soho Playhouse within a year of each other. The first time, I got an actual Playbill, the second time, I got a piece of paper listing the credits. A similar thing happened with the Theatre at St. Luke's. I tried to find out why on Playbill's site, but their site does not provide the answer. I would think their listings would show the Playbill cover, but they don't always do (Toxic Avenger currently has a Playbill, but the listing doesn't show it). Is it the show or the theatre or the producers or something else? Any insight appreciated.

Posted: 1/26/10 at 6:22pmSince this thread was unnecessarily bumped, I'll add a correction. Playbill does NOT pay the production to distribute Playbills; Playbill pays the theater/venue. If the production wants the Playbill covers to be in color, they have to pay for it, but it is completely independent of the theater itself. The Lion King had to switch to Playbills at the Minskoff because it is in Nederlander house, which is paid by Playbill to distribute Playbills.
