Not incredibly close - but Union Smith (on the corner of Union & Smith St.) is fantastic.
I live one block from BAM, so I definitely have some favorites!
Try Berlyn (German) which is right across the street or Caffe e Vino (they have a tomato flan they serve with their bread which is as fantastic as it unique) which is on Dekalb like three blocks away. Both are fantastic. Also, right there at Lafayette and Fulton are Scopello (Italian), 67 Burger, Pequena (Mex...with an amazing grapefruit habenero margarita, I should add), and The Smoke Joint (BBQ) which are also good.
Thanks matty -- I'm going to BAM in February, and was wondering what was around there
It's weird -- there's been so many shows I've wanted to see there over the years, and I never quite got brave enough to go to Brooklyn
(Kind of like St Ann's Warehouse - another place I've always meant to go, and never have)
Once I go my first time, I think I'll be there a lot
Any other restaurant suggestions you have, I'd love to hear
I live in the neighborhood. Here's two that I would heartily recommend:
Stonehome Wine Bar - 87 Lafayette Avenue NY 11217
Olea - 171 Lafayette Avenue NY 11205
Stonehome is closer to BAM (2 blocks away) but Olea is the really special restaurant.
And don't be afraid of St. Ann's Warehouse. DUMBO is a fantastic neighborhood. St. Ann's will be opening a new theater soon, right across the street. It's worth the trip just to see the incredible views of Manhattan and the Brooklyn & Manhattan Bridges. And of course, great theater!

There is also Junior's, the enormous restaurant-delicatessen on Flatbush and DeKalb avenue---it's a really bustling place with a multi-racial clientele, and any kind of food you could want. I remember when if you went to see a show at BAM, it was really the only place you could go to afterwards. This place has a definite big city vibe.
just like the question about where to eat in Times Square.... the correct answer about where to Eat in Brooklyn is JUNIORS. lol. the original one is right by BAM.... his location has more cheesecake varieties then the other 3 locations... try them all. ... SERIOUSLY! lol
67 Burger is also awesome.

The new Thai place "National' is really good.
Smoke Joint we can all agree on
Mullane's is good for pub food. All the stage hand from BAM hang there, I met Mark Morris there and there was a private party with Rickman and company last night.
Chez Oscar on Dekalb for French
General Greene as well.
so you can see one show and eat 38 meals and can't go wrong...
