Well, sorry to say it, but for a designer, Disney shows are amazing projects to work on! All of the Disney shows have amazing production elements.

Do photos of the original production of Follies count? Because those costumes and sets were seriously amazing.
But if we're talking stuff I've seen myself recently, the costumes that have really blown me away are the showgirl outfits at the end of The Boy From Oz. Those headdresses! And though this isn't technically complicated, the moon shining in a sky filled with coin stars in Caroline, or Change was one of the prettiest moments I've ever seen.
thoroughly modern millie- costumes and lighting
i loved how the lighting on the everpresent cityscape changed as the time of day did. And i never realized that much technicolor could make sense in an office setting
oklahoma!- lighting- that backdrop was inspired in the overture with the sunrise and the like

Way back in 1976, A CHORUS LINE truly changed the look of stage lighting. With a basically bare stage - just some mirrors until the finale - the lighting WAS the set design. There were times when each character wasisolated in a tiny square of light. It was especially cool if you were in the mezzanine and could see the patterns on the floor.
It's not such a big deal now, but back then, before the age of comnputer-controlled automatic-color-changing motorized moving stage lights, it was pretty damned impressive!
Sunset Boulevard. Simply amazing
Although I wasn't very impressed with this show, I thought AIDA had stunning sets, costumes, and lighting. I can certainly say that those things were the best part of the show. Everything was very bright, but well placed, and very very Broadway-glitzy.
This wasn't Broadway, but the first show that I really noticed the lighting in was BARE.
Not that I didn't notice that lighting in other shows, but I felt the lighting in BARE added a LOT to the show and created so much emotion during the very crucial scenes.
I mean, when Jason is in the confessional booth and the light is filtering through the confession screen onto his face, that was just a really powerful image that added to the deep scene it occured in.
I agree with Jon -- in 1975, ACL broke all the boundries with it's simplicity and power...
Agreed on AIDA. My lasting impression of the show was of the lighting. The rest of it all went out of my head after I left the theater.
I would have to say Into the Woods, Aida, and Wicked
Thoroughly Modern Millie - lighting, costumes
Wicked - lighting, costumes, scenery
Hairspray - lighting, costumes
Oklahoma! - scenery

I would have to agree Dance of the Vampires was amazing, and so is POTO
The lighting in Movin' Out is terrific. Also loved the scenic design in Caroline or Change.
AIda, Les Miz, and very likely PotO and Wicked (once I get around to seeing them...)

one that made a lasting impression on me: "dreamgirls". that show used four gliding steel towers equipped with lights that "magically" glided to different parts of the stage to define space, create depth and atmosphere with the help of very minimal props. it gave you an "idea" and/or the perception where the action was taking place at the moment whether it was backstage, a dressing room or a concert hall.
the costumes were amazing! theoni v aldredge really did her homework capturing looks from the early 1960s thru to the early 1970s.
the above pic shows the gliding towers on either side, a table in the center, a couple of chairs used to create the illusion that the action takes place in a dressing room.
