the best costumes i've seen r in thoroughly modern millie and the best lighting i've seen is in aida. the best scenery ive seen is in phantom.
yaay!
what i definitely noticed this last time i saw phantom was how many curtains they use in act 1... it really is amazing! and they all open and close so smoothly... i love it. and then there's the staircase... so i guess phantom gets my vote for scenery
I love the TABOO costumes. They're amazing in an over-the-top sort of way. I also love the CATS costumes (I know, it's just cats, but it's really cool!!).
Aida and Assassins both have really great lighting.
I love the MoLM scenery. There's something really interesting about it, as well as Les Miz's, too.

For a play: I agree with KMF, M. Butterfly was amazing on all three fronts. In the same line, I would also add Amadeus, Dracula (Langella revival) and The Elephant Man.
For a Musical:
Sets: Sweeney Todd
Sunset Boulevard
Original My Fair Lady (use of two turnstiles was great)
Costumes: Phantom of the Opera
Follies
My Fair Lady
The King and I
Lighting: A Chorus Line
Aida
Les Miserables

I would have to say that one of my favorite lighting/set designs in a show would have to be the national tour of "Fame!". The rotating escape staircases/hallways and colorful lighting made the show phenominal! I would see this show again in a heartbeat!!
Also, I like:
Into the Woods
Hairspray
The Lion King
The best sets I have seen were Robin Wagner's classic designs for "On the Twentieth Century." They were truly magical.
Jules Fisher's lighting design for Bob Fosse's "Dancin'" was marvelous.

I also think Dance of the Vampires had a great set with cool special effects. Nice lighting but weird costumes that I don't think fit the show or the actors.
