BroadwayHD will present the world streaming premiere of the Off-Broadway musical, Between the Lines, on Monday, September 23, with a Watch Party at 7:00PM. Based on the #1 New York Times bestselling novel from author Jodi Picoult and her daughter Samantha van Leer, the production was captured during its 2022 run at New York’s Tony Kiser Theater, earning four Drama Desk Award nominations including Outstanding Musical and three Outer Critics Circle Award nominations including Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.

There were talks for this to stream on Disney+ sometime last season but the plan fell through and it pushed back the release. (Arielle, Jake, Elyssa + Kate, Jeff C all have Mouse connections.)

I hope to give this a shot soon, I’ve seen a few of these performers in other shows.

Upon my first viewing earlier this week, I thought this was inconsistent — structurally and tonally —but not without some unexpected highlights.

Taking a look at this company, it’s amazing to see how many of them have made it to Broadway ever since this Off-Broadway run concluded. Between the Lines is clearly Arielle’s baby (and it has been since early development) and she is in wonderful voice, but she struck me as a little too old for her role. Amidst all the fairytale chaos, Vicki Lewis and John Rapson bring pathos to the more grounded roles of Jessamyn and the school psychiatrist, though the former also EATS as the chemistry teacher. Wren Rivera never got to play Jo when they worked on Jagged Little Pill, and I suppose Jules may be the closest they’ll come to it. Great snark and a few zippy one-liners.

The book “illustrations” were fabulous throughout. If only I could also say that about the musical’s book, which pales a bit in comparison to the delightful (if derivative) songs. It’s a bumpy ride throughout… a fall off the roof, if you will… but they stick the landing with a near-perfect ending that may even move you.

I thought the “split screen” effect used many times throughout the filming — especially in pivotal moments with two people — was a little weird.

I’m not shocked this had the short run it did in NYC, but I appreciate all the love, hard work, and passion put into the project by a slew of fast-rising talent.

Congrats.
