I'm so glad it's coming to NY. It's such a fantastic show.
For God sakes put Carolee Carmello in the role of Mrs. Wilkensen already!

Posted: 5/25/08 at 10:16amI can't wait for this show to open here in the states. I have seen it twice in London. In repsonse to your question. They are not soliders but policemen during the number angry dance right before intermission. I would like to see them bring Ann Emery over from London to play the grandmother. She is wonderful and also one of the nicest people that you would want to meet.

Not really that hard to describe the "angry dance"
see, this little boy can't really express how mad he is so he's just gotta DANCE! and he puts on these little tap shoes and starts tappin' his little heart, with some inserted grunts and screams. under this really terrible cheesy hardcore rock music...
"The buzz is that this will be the next big hit after Jersey Boys and Wicked."
Really? Who started THAT buzz? If so, I've lost all faith in my New York lovebirds. I saw the show in London and thought it was pretty awful.

That's half of it - now explain the presence of the riot police...

Posted: 5/25/08 at 6:38pmA large part of the story of Billy Elliot is the big coalminers strike which devastated many people in 80s in England. There were many demonstrations and protests going on at the time.

Posted: 5/25/08 at 6:43pmI was hoping TooDarnHot was going to explain why the riot police were onstage during the Angry Dance. In theory, Billy could have done the dance without them...

Anyone know if they're going to change the show at all to better suit American audiences?
Most people don't really get the Miner's Strike, or anything else, I don't think. Or at least, not most tourists. Like all the Legally Blonde gals who go to see it because it has a cute boy on the poster.

There were rumors they were going to, but Daldry has said they are not.
Is the Imperial box office selling tickets yet? If it is, I'm sure that's why the marquis (even if it's temporary) is up.

Have you seen Jersey Boys and Wicked? Both of those shows are pretty awful too. Quality has nothing to do with ticket sales.

That last picture you posted Jeremiah looked really good to me. I still can't forget that young boy singing in the Movie version of Sweeney Todd that I have to go out and buy this week.
I love that they cast three different boys to play the part. As long as the music is good, I can forgive some of the rest. Even though it is another Elton John musical score. Coming from England, it seems appropriate, this time.
I'll be listening closely to hear if MIC starts mumbling about this new Broadway Show.

Posted: 5/26/08 at 1:50amWhen I was in High School I saw the original Evita. Going into it I knew nothing about Eva Peron, by the end of the evening I did. Thet next day I went to the library and learned even more about Eva and Juan Peron. In the mid 80s I saw Sunday in the Park with George, I didnt know a thing about pointalism but by the end of the play I did. People, I really dont think that just because we americans may not be that familiar with the coal miners strike in England ,or the effect that Margaret Thatcher had on the strikers will put us off from Billy Elliot. Theatre should entertain, but also teach. When you see Billy Elliot for the first time you will hopefully be entertained, and learn something as well, there is no need to change it for an american audience. Enjoy!

A cast member told me they're still planning to Americanize it but KEEP the accents.
it makes absolutely no sense..

Which cast member? They haven't even announced casting for the Broadway production and Daldry had said that any of the rumors going around that this show is going to be changed for the American production are false.
From the information I have gatherd about the show it sounds like the british production goes pretty deep into the thatcher suff and what happened during the strike. I am just wondering if that stuff won't go over the head of joe tourist.

Like Londonskyguy says, the theatre is there to educate as well as entertain. Evita, Sunday, Pacific Overtures, Assassins and many others also taught me a lot and I'm glad they did.
The theories and principles behind the miners' strike are understood throughout the free-speaking world. The details aren't necessary for understanding the show but certainly add to the appreciation of it if you do understand them.

From what I understand the basic story (Billy wanting to dance but his dad not wanting him to) would have worked in any backround and the message would have been loud and clear. But, it so happens that it is set against the backround of the minors strik in England.
I also got the impression that the show gets more in depth with the whole strike then it does in the movie. In America the minors strike in England isn't something that is well taught and usually if anyone wants to know anything about it they have to (like I did) research it on their own time.
The theories and the story of the strike itself aren't as understood through out the free speaking world as you might think Scripps. As I said, there are many people in America who don't know what they are and have to do what I did which was look it up on their own.
I am just saing that from what I have read the show goes more into the story of the strike then the moviie does. If that is the case then there might bee the need to "Americanize" it ( though I hope they don't) so that American tourists who know nothing of the strike can understand it.
However, I am hoping that the show does a good job of teaching the audience what they need to know to follow the story line and to do a bit of teaching to the audience of what happend during the strike and what the strike was.

I agree. Plus, the plot of the show isn't about the coal miners' strike. It's about a boy who aspires to be a ballet dancer, with the strike setting the background of the story.
I, however, don't like the idea of keeping the dialect. It is too distracting.
