BKLYN question

Posted: 9/29/04 at 8:21pmI wanted to see BKLYN basically because of Eden but now that its been revealed that Eden is barely even a supporting role, I am having second thoughts about going. For those of you who have seen it, is it worth going to just to see Eden? And as a whole, how would you rate the show itself out of 4 stars? Thanks in advance for your help.

Posted: 9/29/04 at 8:32pm4 stars...It is really a good production. When I went to the show I was very skeptical, in fact my wife had to convince me to go, (I prefer the "old time broadway" style.) It is a feel good show with great music.

Well, I wouldn't consider that barely a supporting role.

Posted: 9/29/04 at 8:44pmWhy not see the show anyway and give it a taste, with or without Eden being a starring role? You should support your favorite performers in all they do, big or small.

I know that the show has gone through changes since I saw it in Denver, but I don't think that you can consider Eden's role as "barely even a supporting role." I would say that all 5 people in the show are principals (is that even possible in a show of only 5?). Depending on how much it has changed, I would say Eden's part is the most vital to the show, for obvious reasons.
There are moments in this show that you will carry with you long after the show is over, and in my experience, many of those moments are courtesy of Ms. Espinosa.

I am done stating my opinion on "Brooklyn", but I do agree that you should see it for yourself and form your own opinions. Many of this board love it. Many on the ATC boards say its the worst musical they have ever seen. There are a number of discounts currently available, so you wont have to shell out the $100.

Testing is right- ticket sales for that show haven't been so great; you don't need to pay $100.
And the ATC board is at:

It's an ensemble show, so everyone gets a chance to shine. There are two performances that stand out, making it seem that they have the lead roles and Eden is one of those.
However, I wouldn't recommend the show. I thought that the music, except for perhaps 2 songs, was uninspired and the storyline was trite- while seemingly trying to be very deep. The only thing that makes most of the songs interesting at all is the ability of the singers. Sing your top note for 16 bars and suddenly a mediocre song has life.
That being said, I look forward to seeing all of these "kids" in something better. They have tremendous talent and if you are an Eden fan, you will probably enjoy yourself.
(Kevin, nothing, if Cleavland Derricks is a kid, Methusalah was middle-aged.)

LOL, NO one on ATC has said it's one of the worst musicals they've ever seen. Do you have a cite for that?
It's an ensemble show, but Eden gets the glory songs. Go see it; it's great.

Posted: 9/30/04 at 11:17amI saw it day one - 9/23. Although Eden IS brooklyn, my opinion is that Paradice (Ramona) steals the show and has more stage time alone. HOWEVER..Eden's voice ALONE is enough to go see it although I wish she had sung more.

We saw the show last night: I had read positive and negative reviews and was determined to keep as open a mind as possible.
'Bklyn' is definately an ensemble piece: all five principals are unbelievably talented. You could hear the perverbial 'pin drop' when Eden belts her first number - I think the entire theatre was in awe. People were giving her a standing ovation: she really WAS out of this world.
Cleavant Derricks, the Street Singer, was the other stand out. Incredible voice and stage presence. I know he's done a lot of movies and television but (imho) the stage needs him. He made me laugh and he made me cry. I would definately like to see more of him on or off Broadway.
The show was indeed a bit strange - you need to put on your thinking cap. It's not your typical song and dance routine. But it was definately worth every penny to see Eden and Cleavant strut their stuff.
I went with a friend who I was not sure would like the show but said after it finished, "Next time I need to sit closer". There will definately be a next time for me and I don't think anyone with an open mind would disagree.
