BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)

This is so exciting. My favorite flop in concert form! I'll probably go on 12/5. Anyone else want to go with me?

Bring Back Birdie was the ill-fated sequel to the 1960 hit Bye Bye Birdie with Donald O'Connor, Maria Karnilova, Maurice Hines and Chita Rivera, reprising her role as "Rosie." The story revolves around Albert (O'Connor) and Rosie hunting down missing teen idol Conrad Birdie for one last televised appearance on the Grammy Awards show. The original 1981 production played 34 previews and ran for 4 performances at the Martin Beck Theatre. Despite it being considered a "flop", the show has lively and charming musical numbers.

Opening Doors Theatre Company is a New York City-based, non-profit performing arts ensemble committed to developing an eclectic mix of programming through the artistic collaboration of performers as well as playwrights, composers, directors and designers, and providing pportunities for new talent to be seen and heard. The company was formed in the summer of 2006.

ODTC's "Closing Notice" Concert Series is a trio of "living cast album" presentations focusing on classic musicals that were either dubbed a "flop", had short commercial runs or most likely will never be produced again. ODTC respectfully presents these scores with the understanding that - unsuccessful or not - the creators poured their craft, guts and love into the work and they deserve to be heard once again - live on stage. The songs will be linked with "liner notes"-like narration and parts of the original book. The next two productions in the season are It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Superman!(1966) by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams (March 2007) and a special 50th anniversary production of 1957's Whoop-Up by Moose Charlap and Norman Gimbel (June 2007).

re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)

It sounds like a fun series, with IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE and WHOOP-UP also planned for the coming months. Too bad it's not in a larger venue -- there's no room for any dance numbers at the Duplex (unless they're VERY small and simple).

re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)

I have heard about this show but have not heard the score. Is it on CD?

Here are a couple of suggestions for future shows: GOLDILOCKS (195re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6) with a score by Leroy Anderson which starred Elaine Stritch and Don Ameche.1958

OH CAPTAIN!(195re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6) with a score by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, which starred Tony Randall.1958

Both are available on CD and have very likable scores.

I don't know how those smily faces got onto my entry--I tried to edit them out. Sorry.

"Thinks I'm gonna cry, Well I'm Not!
Thinks I'm gonna die, Well I'm Not!
Thinks I'm gonna mope around until I rot
Well I won't, not a chance, Well I'm Not

He thinks that I feel small, but I don't!
Thinks I'm gonna crawl, well I won't!
Thinks that I think he's the only life i've got
Well i don't, and i won't, cause he's not!

Gonna be at large now
Look at who's in charge now
Never reckoned I would get a second shot

Thinks I'm runnin' cold
Thinks I'm gonna fold
Thinks I'm gettin' old
Well I'm Not!"

This is just more self-loathing and bad taste perpetrated on a theater audience. If that's the best Opening Doors can do, they deserve neither my time or my dime.

Wouldn't it be "NOR my dime?"

Well, EnchantedHunter, if you're going to have such a negative attitude towards my favorite flop, then you're not wanted there. re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)

...and yes, it would be "nor my dime"

"Hey, Julie
Hey, Jenny
You know what?
No, what?
I'm movin' out!
Movin' out?
I'm 16 now and it's time to go
I'm gonna live with Gary 'cause I love him so
Hey, Gary, baby. How've you been?
Well I found this loft and Jenny's movin' in
You're leavin' home?
Yeah! Well all right!
Do it. Dynamite!
Movin' Out!"

I and my keyboard stand corrected. Yes, it should be 'nor.' And, no: the stillborn corpse that is BRING BACK BIRDIE shouldn't be exhumed.

re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)

I want to be able to hear (better yet see) all of It's A Bird...It's A Plane...It's Superman!, I wish they were using all of the book instead of just "liner-note-like narration." Still, sounds like fun.

re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)

The only drawback to this program (and hey, I'm in support of scrapping the bottom of the barrel - we already have Encores, Musicals in Mufti, etc. for the "good" flops) is that the Duplex stage is so small, you can't even really do a concert version of these musicals. I doubt you can fit more than 5 people on that stage. It will be more like a staged reading in a tiny rehearsal room. Even a slightly bigger space would be a lot more ideal...

Still, its a fun idea and surely there are enough theatre fans that are curious to see WHOOP UP and BRING BACK BIRDIE to sell them out.
