re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)

Yes, I've heard the Duplex stage is small, but hopefully they will figure something out to maximize the use of the limited space. December 5th will be my first time at the Duplex.

Apparently both shows are sold out! Anyone else going? I'll be there singing (well probably mouthing the words) along with the cast. I am so excited!

Everything Is Rosey: NYC Troupe's Bring Back Birdie Concerts Are Sold Out
By Kenneth Jones
04 Dec 2006

Two concert performances of Bring Back Birdie, the flop sequel to Bye Bye Birdie, are sold out Dec. 5-6 at The Duplex.

Opening Doors Theatre Company is resurrecting the 1981 Broadway musical in Manhattan. This is the first of three 2006-07 productions in Opening Doors' "Closing Notice" concert series at The Duplex, 61 Christopher Street, in Greenwich Village.

The new concert production is produced by Suzanne Adams (artistic director of Opening Doors), directed by Hector Coris with musical direction by Andrew Long. Steven Bednasz will serve as assistant musical director and choreography will be by Christine Schwalenberg. The pianist is Jason Sirois.

Cast in the show are Dana Baráthy, Doug Chitel, Desiree Davar, Denise DeMirjian, Scott McLean Harrison, Blayne Levin, Maria Maloney, David Perlman, Jeff Pierce, Marc Tumminelli and Juson Williams.

Bring Back Birdie — with songs by composer Charles Strouse and lyricist Lee Adams, and a book by Michael Stewart — was the bomb sequel to the 1960 hit Bye Bye Birdie, and took a look at songwriter Albert and wife Rosie 20 years after their adventures with the Elvis-like Conrad Birdie.

Composer Charles Strouse is expected to attend the Tuesday performance. Evan Seplow, who played Albert Jr. in 1981, will also be there. The sequel's Conrad, Marcel Forestieri, will also attend, and will help with a raffle at the top of the shows Tuesday and Wednesday.

Bring Back Birdie starred Donald O'Connor as Albert, Maria Karnilova as his mama Mae, Maurice Hines as a detective and Chita Rivera, reprising her role as Rosie (she was Tony nominated for it). The plot involved the search for the long-missing Birdie (for an appearance on The Grammy Awards), with subplots about Albert and Rosie's kids — including a detour into a religious cult, prompting a satiric song called "Inner Peace."

Even Chita Rivera admitted in her recent Broadway revue that Bring Back Birdie was nobody's finest hour. Nevertheless, a cast album was recorded, and it's packed with Strouse and Adams songs that showed a glimmer of what they have been known for since 1960 — plucky show tunes.

The original 1981 production played 34 previews and ran for four performances at the Martin Beck Theatre.

Opening Doors Theatre Company is a New York City-based, non-profit performing arts ensemble "committed to developing an eclectic mix of programming through the artistic collaboration of performers as well as playwrights, composers, directors and designers, and providing opportunities for new talent to be seen and heard."

The "Closing Notice" concert series is a trio of "living cast album" presentations (minus the libretto) focusing on classic musicals that were either dubbed as flops, had short commercial runs or "most likely will never be produced again." ODTC "respectfully presents these scores with the understanding that — unsuccessful or not — the creators poured their craft, guts and love into the work and they deserve to be heard once again — live on stage."

The songs will be linked with "liner notes"-like narration and parts of the original book.

The next two productions in the season are It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Superman! (1966) by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams (March 2007) and a special 50th anniversary production of 1957's Whoop-Up by Moose Charlap and Norman Gimbel (June 2007).

re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)

As you all know, I am a huge fan of Bring Back Birdie, so I immediately jumped at the chance to see this live. I bought my ticket for this back when it was first announced, and honestly, this turned out to be one of the best evenings of my life, comparable to the evening I met Carol Channing in summer 2004.

Last night was my first time at the Duplex. The cabaret room is a cute little space, perfect for things like this that don't appeal to too many people, but enough that the room was packed. As I was walking in, I was just so excited that I was going to see Bring Back Birdie be performed live right in front of my eyes. It was almost like I was in a daze and I wasn't really paying attention to anything...I was just waiting for the show to begin.

My friend and I were seated at a table for five and there were already three other people sitting there - an older couple and a man in his 40s. They introduced themselves, but honestly, it went in one ear and out the other. I just kept talking to my friend about how excited I was and how much I love the show, etc etc.

A few minutes later, it dawned on me that I recognized the older man...then when they were making the opening announcements before the show, they wanted to welcome the composer of Bring Back Birdie Charles Strouse! I was freakin' sitting at Charles Strouse's table! It was a dream come true. Then they made another announcement that an original cast member from the show was there tonight - Marcel Forestieri (the original Conrad from the show) - and he was also at our table! What a treat.

The show, of course, was fabulous. The cast was excellent all around and the music was incredible. Luckily, most of the horrible book had been cut so it was pretty much just a live cast recording with some notes about what happened in between songs. I was really into it...mouthing all the words along with the cast, tapping my fingers on my knee to the beat of the songs - all with Charles Strouse sitting right next to me!!! He also looked like he was having a fantastic time, smiling and laughing a lot. The show was about 90 minutes long with no intermission, and it included every song except "Inner Peace" (the worst song in the show), "Filth" (cut after the first preview on Broadway), and "Rosie" (originally sung during curtain call).

After the show, I took this rare opportunity to tell Charles Strouse how grateful I am to him for writing this show and how much I love the music. I told him that I listen to the cast recording constantly and that my two favorite songs are "A Man Worth Fightin' For" and "Well, I'm Not." He was so gracious and incredibly nice (and probably a bit dumbfounded that anyone could actually love Bring Back Birdie). I also spoke to his wife for a bit, who was lovely as well. Both of them will be attending the Rags benefit next Monday, December 11th, as will I.

I also spoke to Marcel Forestieri. What a thrill it was to see him in person. I told him that I am Bring Back Birdie's biggest fan and that I really enjoy his rendition of "You Can Never Go Back" on the cast recording and how I love how he sang in falsetto at the end...an excellent Conrad Birdie! He now lives in Las Vegas, but I told him that he should come back to Broadway! (i doubt he will though)

To top things off, another man came over to Charles Strouse and Marcel Forestieri to say hello and I was introduced to him as well. His name is Robert Sher, and he is the man who produced the original cast recording of Bring Back Birdie. As soon as he told me this, my immediate response was to tell him that he is my idol and I am so grateful to him for producing this recording, which I listen to religiously. He was telling me stories about the show, why it failed, and also answered questions I had about the cast recording. He also produced the original cast recording of Rags.

Therefore, this was truly a night to remember for me. Not only did I get to see my absolute favorite flop musical be performed live, but I also got to speak to the composer about it, the original Conrad Birdie, and the man who produced the cast recording I love so much. It was such a thrill for me and I am so glad to have been a part of it. I will never forget this night as long as I live.

Thank you so much to the Opening Doors Theatre Company for making a lifelong dream of mine a reality.

re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)

I was there with WAT. It was so much fun!! They did a great job working the small stage at the Duplex; even had some pretty decent dance numbers...

It was so good to see Charles again and to meet his lovely wife. Marcel was a joy to talk to as well. Robert Sher is just one of the nicest guys around. I can't wait to seem them all at the RAGS concert on Monday.

Just to see the pure joy on WAT's face--as well as Strouse's face--reminded me why I love musical theatre. Granted, BRING BACK BIRDIE is certainly not theatre's finest hour, but the cast was clearly having so much fun and the audience was right there with them. Even Charles had a huge grin on his face most of the time. Marcel turned to him at one point during the show and said, "maybe we would have run longer if we 'camped' it up like that!"

I can't wait to see the other productions.

Thanks, WAT for a perfect night at the theatre! re: BRING BACK BIRDIE in Concert! (12/5 and 12/6)
