Again, you ask a difficult question, nom. Can there truly be one correct answer? However, I shall endeavor to share with you my thoughts, such as they are.
It seems to me, that if we force our actors to comply with the public's desire for curling locks by means of artifice, we are cheating both parties. It is unfair to take from an actor the self-expression he receives from his tresses, and, indeed, his performance will suffer accordingly from such a repression. Though the theatergoer may find him more visually appealing, will they be as moved by his message if he is not allowed freedom of self-expression? It would be beyond injustice to allow such tress-style-enforcement to take place. In the same way, it would be nonsensical to remove the more follically gifted from the stage merely because they have been so blessed.
I believe our only hope is in the education of our young. If they can be taught from an early age to value locks both straight and curly, then the original question of, "Do Broadway men need curly hair?" will no longer be an issue. Our audience will be able to look beyond the actor's cranial adornment to see the man that lies beneath. Of course, I know I speak of an unachievable utopia, but if we have even limited success, then hopefully this age-old dilemma of to curl or not to curl will no longer be the question.
Now, my rapier wit is tired, and I must to bed. Fare thee well, noble Broadwayworlders!

Well, ya jes' cain't beat that wickedwitch for givin' us all stuff to dream on...
But today's a new day with new issues.
Tarzan going into the Richard Rodgers. Who'da thunk it.
An English Lord gone ape.
Tarzan, wild in a jungle setting, no barbers, long hair...
Wouldn't it look terribly stringy, straight and unkempt and all?
It's gotta be curly, right?

Coitanly!
what kind of thread is this?

Is that the title of a song or you got commentary, muscle?
It's a very hot hot popular thread, which should be obvious even to the oblivious.
We're here trying, I say trying, to discuss or no comment the serious issues of the day and you like, dump on us, dude.
Like, get your curly haired Broadway men issues out of the closet or like, find someplace else for your carping, harpy.
I say again--TARZAN--should he have curly hair?
Is it a stage jungle necessity?

I just don't understand. Why didn't he play Curly?

Actually, Kringas, Schuler did play Curly when he was younger and he said it was a lot of fun getting to do the Jud role.
Just think, he's sung both parts to that "Pore Jud is Daid" song.
Again, my query, does our jungle Tarzan need curly hair?

I just don't know, but I'm pretty sure that, though he's lived in the jungle all his life, he'll have a shaved chest.
ok...now it makes a little sense...and by the way....I used to watch the sitcom "Tarzan" and he had straight long hair.

That's why it only lasted for eight episodes.

Schuler's the one guy Disney's got signed and announced for Tarzan,
Kringas.
So looks like Disney's got a curly-haired start, though I don't even think the dude is even like, playing a human. I think he's going ape.
Will the Disney Tarzan be curly-haired? And I mean like real, long curly hair?

Seeking the role of TARZAN – A thrilling curly-haired pop/rock singer to play in his 20s. Caught between the world of gorillas and the world of humans, Tarzan is a corkscrew locked human raised by a family of apes in the African jungle. We must identify with him and care about him, his luscious wavy hair and his emotional journey. He is charming, sexy, vulnerable, animal-like, mysterious, and has lots of humanity. He does NOT Have straight hair.
He is physically lean but toned, like a swimmer; he is NOT a muscle man as in the traditional Tarzan type. He should have strong upper body strength and be physical, agile, fearless, and very comfortable with movement and tackling aerial work. His body must be at one with the environment. Must have naturally curly hair or must submit to Toni Home Perm.
Actually it lasted for at least a year! but if it didn't last long ...I'm sure the reason was the fact that Tarzan didn't have curly hair...yeah...no doubts...that was the reason...LOL!!!

Which Tarzan are you talking about? The one with Lucy Lawless or a different one?

Muscle, why do you laugh out loud at our serious scholarly endeavour? The question of hair styling for the modern Broadway actor is a weighty issue, one which we must not scoff at.
As far as Tarzan is concerned, I believe that, yes, he will inevitably be played by an actor with either natural or faux curls. After all, was it not Matthew Morrison, he of the all-too-luxuriant-ringlets, who was originally sleighted for the role?
I believe that Tarzan could be creditably played by an actor with less bounce to his locks, provided they were suitably untamed, but such a thing, I fear, will never be, as Kringas' post has pointed out.
Ah, well, I am off to seek my Utopia. Cheerio!

nomdeplume, I am forced to come clean with you. After all this talk of the resistance (for which I am still a valiant supporter) I feel I must tell you the truth. Once, not too long ago, I, too succumbed to the curl-fascism that is so prevalent today. It wasn't for Broadway, of course, but it was while I was doing a show. If you feel I should step down from my post, I'll understand.
While I still feel the shame of the perm, at least it's finally out in the open.
well... coming out of the closet du Perm is the first step.
I just found out that I have to leave my hair long until December... My hair (while 9.7 inches long) has a bit of a flip at the end... I hate it... does that mean that it will grow into curls? *looks at hair questioningly*

Perhaps not on its own Julian, but a little Wash N' Curl ShampooTM might do the trick.
And thank you for not turning against me. I fear nomdeplume's silence means that I have lost him forever.
Kringa,
Your use of the proper service marks throughout this thread has been incredibly hot.
well, when these kinds of things are out in the open, it shocks people, but they'll eventually come back to you and admire you for being ok with your perm-ed past. It'll just take them a while to get used to it... or because you said it, he decided to join you, and is wearing the rods right now.
