i left early....the sound was unbearably bad. the event was not thought out for the move to the bigger venue. no jumbotrons halfway back for the crowds, making it VERY hard to see. they needed speakers places further back for the rest of the audience too.
i got so frustrated with the various sound levels making everyone sound pitchy, that i just packed up and went home.
they need to get their act together or move it back to bryant park.

It was amusing to hear the crowds in the back chanting, "Louder! Louder!"
And yes, there were some sound issues...the sound kept moving from left to right and back...I was thinking...hmmm...is this some kind of special effect?

Great review...one small quibble though. The orchestra actually finished with the West Side Story overture...that starts with the tonight quintet, but also includes balcony scene, somewhere, and mambo

Posted: 6/27/06 at 1:42amI loved the night, wow the Evita segment was fantastic, I liked hearing the "Merrily" overture live, seeing Hal, Liza, Stritch, Bebe, and Donna all on one stage was just WoW

I was there as well! Great show! I was sitting towards the back, but not as far back as others. It was sooooo crowded. People really need to learn how to get off their cell phones and try to be somewhat quiet. The sound went in and out. When it was in, it was fantastic! I thought everyone did a great job tonight! Bebe was my favoirte. Her voice isnt that wonderful, but theres just something about her. I was surprised to see Liza, but it was great! I also sat right near Kate Reinders and Jenna Leigh Green for some of it. They are so sweet. I remember them being nice from the stage door (I asked Kate to sign for me, she said "wait one second sweetie" and went back in..came out like 5 minutes later, scrambled through all the people and found me and said "ok, so i remembered to come to you first" with a smile on her face. She really is sooo sweet.) Anyway lol, it was a wonderful show. Great orchestra, songs and performers!!!

I'm curious if the sound was better for those sitting close up. I thought maybe the strong wind was affecting the sound, but they really need to work on tht if they are going to have it in CP next year. I did enjoy myself but would have enjoyed it more if the sound issues were resolved. Also, they do need more big screens. Highlights for me was Jane K, Anika, and Kelli O Hara.

What did Ebersole perform?
Sorry I could not be there (missed the Peter Mills PURSUIT OF PERSEPHONE concert as well) as I was at my best bud's 'meet the new cute boyfriend' shindig...and I HAD to be there.
re: BROADWAY UNDER THE STARS AMAZING!#40
Posted: 6/27/06 at 8:56amEbersole sang "Not a Day Goes By" from Merrily We Roll Along. She was amazing. She and Kelli O'Hara were the best of the night.
re: BROADWAY UNDER THE STARS AMAZING!#41
Posted: 6/27/06 at 9:33amThe sound in the VIP section was Great, The wind was probably a factor and since it was the first time in that venue I am sure next year it will be better.

All I can say is that I have wanted to inteview three people in my life.
I am sure that makes all the people you HAVE interviewed feel very special, Corine. Were they just stand-ins until Harvey, Bruce and Elaine consent to fill our your questionnaire?

Sue,
That is not what I meant to say. I only interview people that I adore. Every single interview over the last 5 years have been wonderful. But there are three that I have always dreamed of interviewing and Stritch is one of them.
But,
Jeff Marx. Gerard Alessandrini. Stephanie D'Abruzzo and every other were all there because I admire them.
But, Stritch is a living legend and a character.

i had mixed feelings about the show.
i thought 2 out of the 3 Evita songs were just plain bad. Kelli was hitting beautiful notes, but I hadnt a clue what she was actually saying (i was sitting third row!). Donna clearly hadnt memorized her song fully and flubbed twice.
Carolee, Jane and Bebe were fabulous and Liza was a fun surprise. Mr. Cullom got really into his song running around all over that stage and the boy who opened the show was charming.

The sound in the VIP section was Great, The wind was probably a factor
The sound in the VIP section wasn't good either...
A few points for those who care:
1. wind is not a factor once the audio hits the speakers... the speed of sound at sea level is approximately 761 miles per hour. A light breeze will have little to no impact on what you hear.
2. The absence of delay towers(extra speakers) for a venue of this size was surprising... either someone refused to pay for it, or someone didn't fight hard enough to require them... of course, everything costs money - so possibly they literally ran out... I would have shifted the priorities from *anything* to cover the cost of delay towers.
3. The mix was simply bad. Ms. Stritch should NEVER have been allowed to walk out there with a wig mic on a radio... these things SIMPLY do not work in outdoor venues of this size... this is not the theater - there is nothing intimate about it - so give it up, hold the mic, and figure out how to perform holding a microphone for 3 minutes.
4. Some of the instruments were so poorly mic'd and balances were just plain upside down... sometimes vocals were WAY too loud, relative to the band, so it made everything seem louder than it was... the piano was barely audible (maybe a bad mic) and the mixer had this thing about micing one of the violins, so strings sounded real thin... the keyboard was usually doubling the violins, but that was inaudible.
Look, in fairness to the guys doing sound, it's never easy to do a big one-off like this, BUT -- I have personally been involved in more than a few events of this size (actually, larger), where the audio is/was spectacular. You just need the right people doing it, and the right budgets for hardware. We don't know what the sound designer or audio crew requested vs. what was approved... ALSO -- with the amount of rain that NYC had the prior 48 hours, maybe it was a time and/or safety issue... we don't know... so we can't really judge... but we can bitch that the cheap seats didn't hear very well, and the VIP seats were mixed poorly...
Hopefully, next year will be better.

I thought it was a fantastic concert. I was beside the stage to watch a few performances (Jersey Boys, Kelli & Matt, Sutton, Michael Arden, and a few others). I absolutely love what the Boys did with "All I Ask of You". I saw Dominic as Gaudio the day before, and knew he had a fantastic voice, so I was so excited to see him sing with them. Longoria's falsetto is fantastic!
I also loved everyone else's performances. It was the first one I went to, and I really loved it.

I was there! I was about halfway through the crowd. It was so much fun. I was SHOCKED when they brought Liza out.
My highlights:
Elaine Stritch
Kevin Clay (who is he?)
Sutton Foster
Kelli O'Hara/Matthew Morrison
Carolee Carmello
Michael Arden
Shuler Hensley
Biggest disappointments:
The Jersey Boys (Don't kill me, I hated what they did with the song)
LeAnn Womack (Just... yuck.)

Jeremy You certainly sound like you know what you are talking about!
Give the leagus a call and Tell them How to Improve things!
I was at the rehearsal and Stritch insisted on a body mic and you know you don't tell her no!
Several Others also wore them, did they also have that trouble?
Donna was letter perfect at rehearsal so it was just a slip.
