Many of the other things that Nunn does are nonsensical so the "knife" bit is just fitting.

Well, and I don't remember this in Zeta's performance - Peters has some wildly comic business with a cigarette that for some reason wasn't included in the footage here. But she is able to marry it to the held out "kniifffffeee" that makes it work.

This video has convinced me CZJ's Tony performance would have been exponentially better if they had Hanson sitting next to her.

Absolutely, positvely correct. Notice how Bernadette's head turns from time to time, from Hanson to a "far away" glance, and back. CZJ was forced to sing a very intimate song to an immense house, with no one to focus on. I am sure it was extremely difficult for her. It was not the way she sang the song in the show itself, when she was able to focus on Hanson. NOT HER FAULT, in my opinion.

But, CZJ is a Tony and Oscar winning actress, so why could she not adapt? Many other performers have delivered this song beautifully and convincingly without a Fredrick, Dench to name one.

I think Jones's performance was a result of nerves, the vast stage of Radio City (and her distance from the audience), not being able to to hear the music and having a cold.

Performances on the Tony ceremonies at Radio City have been notoriously awful (remember Idina Menzel in WICKED?). Why the directors haven't stepped in to direct the performances specifically for the camera rather than make them battle how to navigate a 4,000 seat house is beyond me.

But surely having Hanson doing the scene with her would have helped her feel more comfortable

Really?

I've seen her sing it several times and always been struck by the fact that she has always had a Fredrick there.
