Bernadette looks excellent.

Elaine seems to be using very extravagant hand gestures, rather like Leslie Caron did.

Hanson's accent is grating in that excerpt in a way that I don't recall from seeing him in London:

"y' can't force a flower..." does not fit with his natural accent which would have him pronounce "you can't force a flower..."

And, posting as someone who is both British and English, an English accent is an all-encompassing term for the many different accents that can be found throughout the nation of England, whereas a British accent is an all-encompassing term for the many different accents that can be found throughout the lump of rock in north west Europe that includes the nations of England, Scotland and Wales.

That video is hilarious scripps - I need to remember her video on English accents for the next time I need to hear what someone from west Tennessee sounds like.

"Notice how Stritch is singing Liaison not Liaisons. Angela did something similar early on in her run....she sang What happened to them? instead of "What's". Many people pointed that out, but that was when it was "cool" to bash the production. It's all LOVE now!!"

ljay, proper pronunciation of the French language actually dictates that "liaison" and "liaisons" would be pronounced identically without an ending "S" sound. They would be differentiated to a native speaker by the article used before the word. Point being, the "many people" who pointed this out, including you, are unintelligent and should only talk about something they actually know.

^ Honey, the lyric is "Liaisons." It's in the script. This isn't a French musical. If you have a problem with the lyric, please contact Stephen Sondheim.

Don't try to make it sound like Stephen Sondheim is on your side. Throughout the entire song, proper pronunciation would not affect the rhyme scheme. The only instance where it would be important is the raison joke. And while I don't particularly find it funny, it is clever wordplay. This could be easily handled with some pretty simple acting choices. I know the dialect work in the entire show is shoddy, but trying to criticize her on this one particular point is not valid.

But the show isn't set in France. While that might be how a French woman would pronounce it, Madame Armfeldt, to my knowledge, isn't French.

Every Madame Armfeldt has pronounced it "Liasons." I can't believe we are really arguing this.

OH. So because something has always been done one way means it can't be done another. I see now. I don't even really care that much; I saw this production and left very ambivalent. I just want you to be informed when you're presenting your opinion on an issue instead of writing like "It's all LOVE now!!"

Huh?? I do not comprehend what you are saying. Anyway you are the one rewriting Sondheim's lyric.

Actually if you go back and listen with headphones - she is singing "Liaisons" with an s. So its all a moot point.

just out of wonder, why did they ditch the wig designs worn by Angela and Catherine?
Stritch seems not to be wearing one, and if Bernadette is it looks exactly like her real hair

Well I doubt Peters and Stritch wanted to be styled exactly like their predecessors.

Bernadette's locks are her trademark, of course her Night Music wig would be designed to resemble her real hair. Hell, even her Gypsy wig incorporated those locks.

Stritch's wig more or less resembles her own hair, but its definitely a wig. I'm actually intrigued as to why Stritch's costumes are so much less elaborate than Lansbury's (and Maureen Lippman's) in London. Peters is wearing the same designs as her predecessors which leads me to think that perhaps there just wasn't time to build the elaborate beaded overlays that marked what Lansbury wore.

Maybe they didn't want Stritch's costumes to weigh more than she does.

I was wondering the same exact thing! Stritch's look fine, but they are certainly not as elaborate. I really love the costumes in this revival, it's such a shame the designer was not recognized with a Tony nomination.

As I typed the above, it occurred to me that perhaps Stritch might have wanted something less confining. She certainly uses her arms and hands more than Lansbury did in the role.

^ True! It's interesting that basically all of the changes involve Stritch. Different costumes, different wheel chair, the flower on the wheel chair, the tea pot during "Glamorous Life", wears a hat (two different ones) for the entirety of act 2, she doesn't stand during the middle section of "Liaisons", and she didn't smoke during the opening scene when I saw her.

I'm sure she came to the table with very specific ideas of things she'd like (and wouldn't like) to incorporate into the role.

Idea number three on her costume changes - actually - I bet the change had to do with cost. Looking at Lansbury's costumes, those were easily the most expensive in the production - I bet the producer's weren't willing to pay the cost to replicate them for a three month run.

Broadway.com has the new production photos! I'm not crazy about the quality though.

This one is amazing

I know I am neither the first nor the last to express this thought, and I know how unlikely it is, but having seen how good Stritch and Peters are in these roles, it would be wonderful if it could be filmed.

Not to seem churlish in the light of so much to celebrate, but...

Why must Bernadette hold out "kniiiiiiiiiiife" the way Catherine Zeta did?

It's just not funny if you hold it like that. It's all about him catching her off guard for a moment.

"You must meet my wife!"

"Let me get my hat and my knife--"

"What was that?"

Plus if the audience hears no eff-sound at the end of the eye-sound, there's no rhyme and no humor.

If Bernadette and Zeta both do it, it must come from the director.
