Patti LuPone in the original Sunset. Awful.
The more recent broadway revival of Into the Woods
Mamma Mia - dreadful and in no way an indication of how fun/"good" the show itself is

Both seem like the casts were gathered together inside a public restroom, with a single microphone picking up everything from somewhere next door.

I agree the changes in the Into the Woods revival were unnecessary, accept for the shortening of "Our Little World" and the changing of octaves many places in it...I much prefer a creamy alto witch to a warbly soprano any day. Also, the Baker's Wife was not too great (no one tops Joanna Gleason) but Laura Benanti is FANTASTIC!
I didn't think the London ITW singers had any theatricality in their singing. it was like they were singing songs too tough for them (not that they were, it just sounds that way) and some of the thick accents turn me off a little, I guess.

Anyone else notice that the Narrator of the OLC was horrifically tone deaf?
*It just played on shuffle.

I haven't heard a bway cast recording that I've liked. They all sound terrible. The mix is always awful---about 90% vocals, all high end, no mid range or bass. They don't sound like records, they sound like cheap demos.
I'm on a Broadway cast recording, and it sounds like crap. I can't bear to hear it.

Call me crazy, but the Spring Awakening recording doesn't do the show justice. It sounds weak, almost distant.
Also, "The Frogs", the Broderick revival of "How to Succeed", and the original "Pajama Game."
I also think that the Jersey Boys recording has too much book on it, but it's brilliant singing-wise.

"whats wrong with wicked? it sounds like the show"
actually I don't think it does. When I saw it the actors were ACTING. NOT that lame "I hope your happy" monotone delivery.
It sounds like they are just speaking the words with no sense of emotion at all. Its a great show but a terrible recording.
"elphaba, why couldnt you stay calm for once. instead of flying off the handle"
on the album...it sounds like nothing! thats just one example of how bad it is.

I REALLY can't stand when Josie DeGuzman sings on the '92 Revival Recording of Guys and Dolls. She ruins it for me. Much the same way that Carol Lawrence's VERY pitchy "I have a Love" from West Side Story makes me ill, cause that's a gorgeous song. If you ever go to *That site* and look at a video of Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett at Carnegie Hall singing Broadway songs (in black and white), they do a GORGEOUS rendition of A boy like that/I have a love. THAT'S how maria should sound. Well, okay, not British, but you know, PITCH PERFECT
I also agree about WICKED. I think it's a very BAD cast recording. And no, it doesn't sound just like the show...unless you saw the actors phone in their roles for the night. Then again, I hated WICKED and hate the music. So what do I care?
