I heard a rumor the Barbie musical is closing? Does anyone know if this is true?
I was unaware Barbie had a musical. I'd love to hear about it for the sheer camp value.
Barbie, the musical, played in DC about a month ago. The Washington Post interviewed the actress playing Barbie, as Barbie, and it was funny and scary at the same time. Apparently, Barbie is coached on what she can and can't say and a lot of her answers made absolutely no sense regarding the questions being asked!!

Last I heard it was still touring the country. Should be coming to Radio City sometime in 2007 (March?). Yes, it probably is campy and cheesy but the music was composed by Robbie Roth who is extremely talented. He's Gavin Creel's writing partner and wrote/cowrote pretty much all the tracks on Gavin's album

While waiting in line for Drowsy lottery tickets a few weeks ago, I was standing next to a girl who's in the Barbie Musical. At the time, she said they had a two week break I think.
It was cancelled here in Sacramento....so maybe it is closing.
I saw the show and it was a good show for children. It made the kids happy. I saw Erin backstage and she seemed very down to earth. It was nearly sold out in Fort Lauderdale.
Living off McDonalds would make kids happy too, but that doesn't make it good.
DottieD'Luscia, that interview was kind of...disturbing. Why not just the effort of the corporate handler and just install a pull-string?
Is the cast recording available? If not, start a petition!
I didn't love the show, so it's not like im a fan of the show or anything, but it had nothing but good messages for children. Orangekittles, did you see the show?
I saw the movie. It was bad enough. Unless George Orwell re-wrote the book for them, I can't imagine that drastic of an improvement.
I vaguely remember skimming the Washington Post review when it came to DC a while back.....i don't remember it being a good review.
I remember being at the Metro Center station in DC the weekend that Barbie was here, and seeing little girls with light up tulips. As much as I was curious to see the show, as a grown man, I would have been slightly embarassed to ask for one ticket at the box office!!
I think this would play well off Broadway. This and Chekov.
A group of us looked into working on an original Barbie musical about 15 years ago. Her "image" is so tightly controlled by Mattel that they would never have agreed to the kind of "vision" we had for the show.
We were hoping for an evening of double-meanings, raised eyebrows, light camp, and yet still family friendly (enough). Think "Brady Bunch Movie" as far as pushing the level of what we could get away with and still come off as innocent. Both celebrating and skewering her image.
Unfortunately we were told early on that Mattel would NEVER go for it, so we gave up our efforts.
Best12, I could only imagine how funny it would have been!!
Yeah DottieD'Luscia, I think I also might have been just a little embarrassed going by myself to see a Barbie musical!
Thank goodness level headedness prevailed!!
orangeskittles - an Orwellian Barbie sounds like heaven! Big Barbie is watching YOU!
Of course, the people in charge of the "Barbie" image aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer.
They turned down Disney/Pixar's offer to put her in the first "Toy Story" movie.

Did anyone expect this show to get glowing reviews? Is it an actual musical or a big spectacle? How's the set? Any pictures from the production?
This reminds of the Simpson episode where Smithers takes time off to play a Ken look-a-alike in the Malibu Stacy (re Barbie) musical.
