Baron Cohen To Rap the Role of Pirelli in Sweeney Film

Posted: 12/17/06 at 1:49pmBy "rapped", don't they just mean sort of talked-sung? Like whoever played Morrible in Wicked that couldn't sing? Because as much as I'd like somebody who can do the music justice, if they insist on using someone who can't sing I'd rather see it "rapped" than see him attempt to sing it.

Everyone simmer down.
Sondheim leaves next week to prepare for the Feb recording. I think he knows what he's doing...
Don't put too much trust in that article.

Posted: 12/17/06 at 1:58pmI'm sure it will be fine if it happens. If you all LOVE Sondheim and think he's absolutely brilliant, then I'm sure he will make this work.

Posted: 12/17/06 at 2:00pmkill me know, this is why people don't take musical theatre serious anymore...ugh o well I guess we will just have to wait till it comes out..

Posted: 12/17/06 at 2:02pmI knew **** like this would happen! When I found out, I flipped my wig. Why can't they just cast some ACTUAL talent...it IS after all a MUSICAL!
#31re: Baron Cohen To Rap the Role of Pirelli in Sweeney Film
Posted: 12/17/06 at 2:04pm...Because then only we would go see it?
#32re: Baron Cohen To Rap the Role of Pirelli in Sweeney Film
Posted: 12/17/06 at 2:04pmOkay, is it really that big of a deal if Pirelli doesn't sing? No. In fact, the song is almost sung as if he were talking anyway, and will still be as effective if talked.

They didn't have to get Sacha Baron Cohen for this! They just saw that Borat was a hit so they got him! They could've just cast Johnny Depp and the rest be musical theatre talents and a million people still would've come!
But who knows? Johnny and Sacha might suprise us. Remember when it was first announced that Eddie Murphy was going to be in Dreamgirls and everyone fipped out? Now he's being nominated for a Golden Globe! And like a lot of people have said, Sondheim knows what he is doing.

Yea, but how much pull does Sondheim actually have. Just because its his movie doesn't mean he gets fulls creative and casting control for the film.
I thought Eddie was perfect, because he IS a singer, and had a music career before a movie career.
I can handle a lot when it comes to movie musicals, but for the LOVE OF THEATER...please let's not have him RAP!

What is up, vanilla face. Me and my homie, Tobias, just parked our slab outside. We're looking for somewhere to post up our black asses for the night, so bang bang, skeet skeet, buddy. We just a couple of pimps, no hoes.

Sondheim was very much a part of casting. Much more so than previous films of his.
I've said before--this script is very different than the show. It's fantastic, fun and scary.

Why are we all trusting a website nobody's ever heard of and freaking out about an article that begins with "“Pirelli is a NOTORIOUSLY demanding role with some difficult songs.'"?
Since when has Pirelli been notoriously demanding. Some difficult songs? He has A SINGLE song, which is is kind of semi-spoken to begin with.
#43re: Baron Cohen To Rap the Role of Pirelli in Sweeney Film
Posted: 12/17/06 at 3:49pmI honestly would rather them dub him like they did in the 30's and 40's (Or whenever all those movie musicals were made). Or for them to use digital editing. Then for him to "rap". But, if by rap they mean speak-sing(as many have pointed out) then I think it's fine.

Posted: 12/17/06 at 3:57pmI am sure the article was written by someone with absolutely no musical knowledge and in their small realm of experience when someone speaks along with music they call it "rapping". I am sure that Cohen will speak-sing a la Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady.

Posted: 12/17/06 at 3:57pmIt's funny reading all of you people who say Pirelli is a walk in the park to sing. LOL You either have never sung or really don't know that role. It's not spoken it's sung. There are notes written in it and at the end there's a high C. Yeeeaaah I'm sure everyone and their mother has a pleasant high C. Notoriously difficult? I'm not sure about that but it certainly isn't a walk in the part. One must have some training to do it well.

Posted: 12/17/06 at 5:57pmWhat I don't get in all of this press release is the comparison to Jim Broadbent. Broadbent is a THOROUGHLY trained actor with quite a good singing voice. And he did indeed sing his songs in "Moulin Rouge" without "rapping" them. Regardless, Moulin Rouge was composed of preestablished pop/rock songs that the audience was already vastly familiar with. Sweeney is an original score. I can't possibly believe this story is for real.

This film will be one of the best of 2007; Johnny Depp is playing the murderous barber Sweeny Toss while Helena Bonham Carter is playing Mrs Lovett, the baker."
It doesn't exactly sound like it's coming from a reliable source, folks. Unless you're planning on seeing SWEENY TOSS, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
