Has anyone had the opportunity to see Barrett as "Leaf Coneybear" in "Spelling Bee"?

Yes, I love him in general so I'm not going to critique his performance.

I loved Barrett in "Avenue Q," but I didn't really enjoy him as Leaf Coneybear.

To his credit, I saw him in his first week, so he could have improved vastly since then, but at that time, he was having vocal issues (he cracked pretty badly on the big final note in "I'm Not That Smart,") and just played the character very moody and downtrodden, a far cry from the humorous portrayal that Jesse delivered, which I prefered and felt was truer to the character's nature.

I am sure he'll grow into it in time, though.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

I saw him Saturday night, and I didn't think he was all that bad. He certainly wasn't as funny as Jesse. He was more quiet and reserved as Leaf. Search for the Spelling Bee Love Thread and you should find many more reviews.

Well I think most people generally enjoy Barrett.

Thanks for your help, guys! I am planning on seeing him in it (if he's still in it in the Spring). I love him in general. I think people go into it thinknig he'll be a lot like Princeton. I think he was FANTASTIC as Princeton.

I saw him a week or so ago, Sunday night July 30th. I was rooting for him to be good and he was. Vocally he sounded fine (no cracks or anything), and he was better dramatically than I'd worried he might be (without generalizing, I've noticed that very good-looking actors sometimes are less effective when they have to access their "inner loser" for a role -- they sometimes haven't had much life experience in that area to draw on). Overall, it was a fun and sweet performance on his part.

I saw him back in early July before he "officially" took over the role for good. He was filling in for Jesse Tyler Ferguson who I guess was out on a vacation I loved him!

His voice is good in the role. He was pretty funny in the role.

But he was much better in Avenue Q. He is still sway sexy and i will have all of his beautiful blonde babies.

He had me laughing today. I loved his performance in Bryant Park.
He seemed to be having a blast.
I was impressed. Jose was also hilarious today.
I think I am going to see the show in the next few days.
I have not seen it in over a year.

Barrett was very good when he performed at Bryant Park. I didn't hear his voice crack and he seemed comfortable in the part. He looks like a genuinely nice guy! I was impressed.

I saw Barrett perform in bryant park and sat in the front row lotto seats at the 8PM performance in the night before.

Barrett's vocal choices in "Spelling Bee" are character choices. His voice is awesome. There is a wide range, but I feel like he's got this character voice going for Leaf. I also agree with the person who said he plays Leaf too moody and downtrodden. When he's not focused on and he's sitting on the stadium, he's always wearing a very blank or sad expression. I loved when he shook his hair though! Overall, he gives a strong performance and stands out with Celia. I can't say the same for Josh Gad (Barfee).

Barret was hysterical when I saw him on Thursday. His comedic timing is perfect, and he was so funny with the volunteers from the audience. He didn't disappoint at all!

Josh wasn't memorable. When I saw it was Dan Folger, he made you hate/love Barfee at the same time. Josh didn't do anything awkwardly quirky with his voice and I didn't find anything he did new. It's almost like he was copying Folger's antics. I just think he needs time to grow into his own Barfee.
