As per IBDB:
"No formal opening night was ever scheduled. By agreement with the League of New York Theatres and Producers (now The Broadway League), the opening date was set at 5/31/77 for the record."
I believe this may account for the discrepancy, though I don't know exactly why the numbers vary so significantly. As the show switched venues twice during the length of its run, maybe someone who didn't count the lack of a formal opening night at its initial theater decided to count only from the opening at the next venue? I dunno.
(For the record: using May 31, 1977 as the opening date puts the count at 5 previews and 1,006 performances, again according to IBDB.)
