Posted: 12/12/13 at 12:37amWhatever version of the book to Pippin is used in this revival, it's still lousy. I found it even more juvenile, simple minded, and self-centered than the first time. And the score is no great shakes, either. I guess Fosse did an even greater job than we realized.

I think some of you don't understand this thread. It's pretty much in the title:
"***BELOVED*** THEATRE IN 2013 THAT BAFFLED, BORED OR BUGGED YOU"
Would anyone, beyond a clutch of Orlando Bloom fangirls, describe either of the high profile R&J productions as "beloved"?

Yes, Passion belongs on my list too!
A whole new thread could be created on the unfortunate tendency to elevate everything Sondheim has done to the irreproachable, and woe be it to any apostate who deviates from complete adoration.
Throughout his career, Sondheim has taken risks, many of which have resulted in works that I find more rewarding than other musical theater. But risky ventures by definition sometimes don't work.
