Looks like Bernadette Peters was asked to extend her contract till September! I am so thrilled!! She just needed to warm up to the part that's all! I hope she sticks around. No word on whether Tammy Blanchard will do the same. Here's hoping!

She will extend. This is the role of a lifetime for her so I don't see her walking out anytime soon. And I bet they'll compensate her for staying with the show quite well, I'm sure. As for Tammy, I hope she extends as well.

Gee.. How long do you think it will take her to warm up to the part? She is just horrible in it. A travesty if you ask me. And I was so looking forward to see if they came up with a good replacement.

How long is Tammy supposed to stay?

Nothing, at least to my knowledge, has been said about Ms. Blanchard. Her contract is probably up in March just as everyone else's is. I'd like to see her stay, and I don't know of any other upcoming jobs for Tammy that would require her not to leave. Basically, if I was her, I'd stay 'til it closes.

Oh, come on. Travesty? Please stop dissing Bernadette Peters like this. She IS GREAT with the role. Obviously since they asked her to extend. You probably saw her on a bad day, which I'm sure all actors go through.
Your hatred for Bernadette Peters is very clear...I wonder why?
Bernadette is awesome in the part - THE definitive Rose. Stephen Sondheim has stated that she is the best Rose he has ever seen.

Anyone know what Arthur Laurents' opinion is on Peters' interpretation of the role? I know in an old interview I read a few months back he said that Tyne Daly was the best, in his eyes. He stated that Ethel Merman was not an actress, and that Angela Lansbury was only proficient. This article was published before the show started previews in late March last year, so I wonder what he thinks of Bernadette?

Couldn't have said it better myself.

How sad.
I hope she does. I want to see her!
When was she originally leaving? I'm seeing the show in a week. Updated On: 1/14/04 at 07:56 PM

Actually BROADWAYNYC; I usually love Bernadette. Even liked her in Goodbye Girl. But she is dreadful in it. And it is a shame because I love Gyspy so much.
According to a column by Marc Reidel in today's NY Post, Reidel feels "Gypsy" may not make it into the spring. Doubt the recent cold weather helps Broadway & Gypsy has to be hurt by it as well.
put her out of her misery!

Sure. Everyone gang up on her.
If she's thinking of extending, how miserable can she be?

Theatermafia- this is totally off topic but the picture you have is hysterical.

I SAID...I don't want to hear any bad talk about Bernadette.
She has nothing to prove to anyone. She is awesome in Gypsy and you'll come to see she'll extend her contract and end the show with a BANG. No early closings for this one...

Bestofbroadway; thanks I love that pic :) As for Bernadette; I do wish Gypsy would close so that she can move on to a new show. Something that is right for her. This just isn't.

I really enjoyed seeing her in Gypsy. I guess it's all about taste. Besides, not everyone can love you.

She'll move on I'm sure...but not till she'll finish her extended run with Gypsy!
I'm saying this seriously, and not in offense to Bernadette, but I really hope she doesn't hurt herself. Her voice already seems pretty damaged, and on the CD you can hear her gasping for air, and I doubt it's a character thing. She's not in the same conditions she was a few years ago, and I hope she stays healthy throughout however long she stays.

Hmm. The Box office numbers for Gypsy are medicore. ( and have been even before the winter months). Just because her contract gets extended does not mean the show will continue running. We will see......

...and it also doesn't mean that the show's closing tomorrow. For cryin' out loud, people. Just because it's not raking in over a million a week doesn't mean the show doesn't have an audience. Now that Taboo is going I suppose the dogs are out after Gypsy and Bernadette.
