If Bernadette is staying on until September then I am definitely going to order some tickets for the summer! I really wanna' see it, but I really don't have time to see it anytime soon and I really want to see her! C'mon, Bernadette -- a little longer!

MusicalComedyMan: Perhaps it went over your head while looking at the box office numbers from last week, but all shows, and yes ALL shows, took a drastic dip in their profits. "Hairspray" dropped down to the 80's. You know what means, folks. Expect a closing notice on the box office window at the neil simon first thing Monday morning.

PJ is right....All shows took a big loss in sales this past week, and it will probably continue through January...It is always like that! We just have to get through these next few weeks, and then all shows will be picking back up again...This has always been a tough time for Broadway, and yes a lot of shows do tend to close in this time period...But I imagine Gypsy will stay open at LEAST through September!!

Actually, the dip in sales will probably last until mid-March. This happens just about every year. January - March are always tough months for Broadway. Those shows that were not doing too well before this time are hit especially hard and many many shows close during these months.

SingNYC is right. Sales will dip until March mainly because of the weather. The snow is already piling up here. Anyway, yes all shows took a dip as they do every year this time. Gypsy is definately staying open.
Other shows that were highly anticipated aren't doing very well. Look at Wonderful Town...that is not living up to its expectations, even with Donna Murphy in it. And as for Taboo, I thought it was just ok. I really didn't think it had staying power anyway.
I know Gypsy will close sooner or later. But I think it has staying power, and it will do just that.

Do any singers who post here regularly really support the opinion above, that Bernadette has damaged her voice in this show? I doubt that. She's taken extraordinary care of her pipes over the years. People often comment thusly. A lot of the sound she employs in this show seems intentional, to create a less Peters-esque (not an aging ingenue) approach. I'll never forget my first exposure to her Rose, on the Tonys. I remember thinking, "she's finally turned into a grown up--a woman." She wasn't using the big flowing hair, or the Kewpie doll personna to sell it. Just something more basic--simpler. I have to believe she's found a way to make the voice serve her, for the long haul. She didn't miss, in previews, because she wasn't able to sing Rose, but because she was ill.

Yes, I agree. I thought the cd sounded very beautifully. But I will point out that in "Some People," she does sound a bit hoarse towards the end out it. However, it sort of fits into the song. But overall it is amazing. I think Bernadette Peters would never put her voice on the line....Too too too bad she caught that cold from the beginning...

When I saw the show, I could have sworn she was on sedatives. All her words were jumbled and slurred together, it was all, 'Papa, I hubbadajubbadamubbada.' And then her singing...it just wasn't singing. It was GROANING.

Those of you who are against her in the role, when exactly did you see the show? If you saw it anytime between March and May, it might not have been that great. Those performances don't even come close in comparison to the performance she's giving at the Shubert these days.

So if her performance is so much better now than last May, I guess she was not robbed and the Tony award to Winokur was correct. Can't have it both ways people.

Her performance as of very recently was bad. And her voice..poor thing. Please Bernadette; move on and take care of your voice so we can see you in other things. Let this turkey go!

She didn't win the Tony because she hadn't found her niche yet in the role. I think a lot of nay-sayers stuck their foot in their mouth and kicked themselves in the arse after seeing her performance during the Tony's.

No, Bernadette lost the Tony because she was sick for most of the performances when Tony voters attended. A victim of opening at the end of the season and a badly timed illness. Bernadette has been giving stellar performances in this role since early May when the show was finally frozen and she was finally healthy. If you only saw her during previews, I would definitely recommend you go back.
Yes she is even stronger in the role now than she was last summer but I would hope all actors would grow in their parts the longer they perform them. But she has been giving amazing, Tony worthy performances since the show opened. No it wasn't just on the Tony telecast - I saw that same amazing performance the week before and the night after the Tonys.

I saw her a week after the opening and I thought she was fabulous. I have seen GYPSY many times with many different actresses as Rose. I thought Bernadette brought a fresh, new perspective to the role. She really makes Rose a loser, a sad woman who has had everything she ever wanted slip away or walk away from her. She is also the only actress I've seen play the role that you could believe could have been the kind of star she wants June to be. The parallels between Rose and her daughters are striking in this production. I think Bernadette and the production are underrated. Authur Laurents has said he loves Berndette in this role.
