Wanted to share this with everyone on this board...
I was talking to a neighbor last night who now lives in Western New York but used to be a police officer in NYC. He was stationed in the precinct that includes Times Square. He was recalling that as a rookie officer, he was often stationed right outside the Marriott Marquis and, more specifically, the Marquis Theatre. This was during the run of the revival of 'Annie Get Your Gun.' He said he would see Bernadette almost nightly and that she would often try to give him her nightly tickets to the show. And even though he turned her down every time, she would offer over and over again. Whats more, he said her driver would often have to call to her to "say goodbye and get in the car" because she wanted to make sure she was signing autographs for everyone waiting and taking time to talk to every fan.
It was one of those instant 'feel good' stories. What grace and class.
(On the other hand, he said Tom Wopat was the exact opposite).
I can confirm all that. I remember countless nights of walking past the Marquis Theatre stage door during that time and Bernadette was still out there (with her late husband standing patiently by the towncar) as she posed for photos and signed autographs. And this was way after the performance had ended.
She did that at Night Music too, but I don't think she stage doored for Dolly. She's very lovely.
I hope she will return to Broadway soon. It's time for the first Broadway revival of "Dear World".
Got to love this review of a recent Bernadette concert, who describes "In Buddy's Eyes" as a female character "singing triumphantly about men wanting them". Reminds me on ATC someone complaining that Bernadette's character seemed pissed off with Buddy up until that point, so why would she sing a love song about him? Clearly, not everyone 'gets' it (admittedly it would be hard out of context).

Another highlight from the next Frank Rich "I would have loved to see the more dated numbers be offset by some newer, more progressive Broadway hits. Just imagining Peters taking on “Popular” from “Wicked” gives me goosebumps."
I think Patti or Ebersole can take over from here: "No, thank you indeed".

I've met Bernadette a few times after show and at the flea market, and she has been nothing but lovely. She always is ready to take a picture, sign an autograph... we shouldn't expect this from everyone, but a "true" Broadway star always shows appreciation for their fans by doing this little gestures
