If you knew nothing about this play, wouldn't you expect a comedy based on this ad alone? There is maybe one brief scene with those three characters happy and smiling.

Speaking for myself, "no", I would not. But I think your premise, "if you knew nothing about this play" is unreasonable.

I cannot imagine a world where I knew nothing about "Death of a Salesman". Instead, I believe all the smiles on the cast's faces are meant to imply that the show is not going to be a dreary barrage of melancholy (as the title might suggest).

Not at all.  Nathan Lane certainly isn't smiling, also: combined with the upper pix, how could you?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Yeah, the top photo really seems like a happy & smiling comedy…

Also, people don’t really associate the words “Death of” to something good - except for the one we’re all waiting on, of course.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

Low stakes for this ad campaign. Death of a Salesman will sell out the remainder of its run at premium prices. Hell, I would have canceled the advertising.
