Now that the Kennedy Center "Mame" did not make it to Broadway and the Nederlanders still want to produce revivals of Jerry Herman's musicals, what about Bernadette Peters as "Mame?" Forgetting her age since she does not look it and considering her experience with Jerry Herman scores, I think she'd make a great "Mame" and sell tickets! Time Heals Everything!
I think the story is that Peters is more interested in the "other" Jerry Herman show with the big title song.

you mean, shes mor interested in Mrs. Santa Claus?
She is going to play all three roles in JERRY'S GIRLS....
Is it really going to happen? or Is she just interested in doing it?
Dolly would be great too! The woman can do anything she wants at this point.
wow.
lol
i do hope this happens. like, my life would be complete.
That would be fun!
I've never gotten to see Mame in any form, I was sad it didn't make it.

Now that a stage production of MAME has been successful once more - perhaps Jerry Herman is ready to do the television musical he's been promising for years.
BUT - without Cher, please.
Bernadette needs to originate another role. Enough with the revivals.
Gee.. can't say that I see it. Great talent, but don't think its fit.
Bernie can do whatever she wants
She has enough talent and I think she'd be great in MAME
Bernadette could pull off Mame, but I think there are other performers out there better suited to the role. As for Dolly, I think that ought to go to Tovah Feldshuh...I saw her at the Papermill, and I thought she was fabulous...maybe not ready for Broadway yet, but a few voice lessons could take care of that.
I was just thinking... Wow! Peters has reached that stage when she is considered for Dolly or Mame.... isn't that the first sign of decline in a musical theatre actors career?
i wouldn't say that i mean hell Elaine Stritch is still acting.
I agree i would love to see bernie create a role.
Barbra Streisand asked Jerry Herman to make one change for the TV version. She wanted It's Today to be a solo. He refused. Barbra refused to make the TV version. No matter how Jerry feels, more people would have seen that Streisand TV version of Mame than any of Jerry's stage productions put together.
Barbra could have performed it as a solo and then the ensemble could have performed the reprise.

Your statement doesn't make any sense. Peters is 58 this year. When Lansbury went into rehearsals for "Mame" she was 39. Channing was 43 when she opened in "Hello Dolly!". Therefore how at nearly sixty can playing a character that was first introduced on the Broadway stage by women nearly twenty years her junior be detrimental to her career? Not to mention that after playing "Mame", Lansbury went on to star in "Dear World", "Prettybelle", "Gypsy" and "Sweeney Todd" only choosing to end her stage appearances by doing television. Playing Mame Dennis certainly didn't hinder her. Furthermore, how old a character do you think Peters should be playing at this time of her life? Hmmm....Peters as Belle? Millie? Peggy Sawyer? Tracy Turnblad?...Annie???
I think Peters is done with revivals for now. SHe has said several times that she wants her next musical to be original.
No! No! No! This is a truly awful idea. She is no MAME. Mammy Yokum maybe, but not Mame.
RUMOR IS...
Bernadette is seriously considering the title role in OUR AMERICAN COUSIN.
Arthur Laurents says she's going to play the role the way he always envisioned it.
