futurealladin is spot on with the pepsi vs. coke comparison
This thread is gayer than a straight Republican senator.
Who cares why people prefer one Rose over the other? It will always happen. With everything. It's like I always say, no matter how awful a song is, there is someone out there who says, "That's my favorite song!"
The beginning of this thread is HILARIOUS!

I saw Gypsy and expected to enjoy, though not love, Lupone's performance. But I really thought that she was amazing. What a gutsy, not vain performance. By the end, she really had a mania and looked maniacal, not at all attractive, which was different from any others I had seen. Although I have really liked all of the performances, I would probably rank Lupone's at the front. But, Lansbury, Daly and Peters are all right up there as well -- each brought something really unique to the role. I should add one more mention that I thought that Linda Lavin, Daly's replacement when she finally left the show, was extraordinary too, especially in Act II, she was almost as close to the same mania that I saw in Lupone.
Seeing Patti perform on the Tonys helped me understand why people love her as Rose. I still don't understand why Bernadette's portrayal didn't get the same praise. Oh wait, yes I do. Some people (no pun intended) don't appreciate subtlety and vulnerability.
"That's why Patti has one Tony, and Bernadette has TWO."
It's 2-2 now.
No offense but this topic is getting old!
What Patti was doing on that stage every night was magic. She gave that character humanity and belted her heart out. Bernadette's intention was to make Mamma Rose petite and sexy. If only she hadn't been blowing out her vocal's every night, it could've worked. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there was no standing O for her everything's coming up roses.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Patti's still performing in Gypsy. No?
If you're referring to Bernadette's Tony performance; she did not perform "Everything's Coming up Roses" (as Patti did this year); she performed "Rose's Turn" and most certainly did get a standing Ovation.
Normally in the show neither Patti nor Bernadette receive(d) Standing Ovations nightly for "Everything's Coming up Roses" since it isn't usually a song that receives one.

If you mean Bernadette's "Rose's Turn" on the Tonys, it definitely did receive a standing ovation at Radio City.
Blowing her voice out every night? I saw her three times and she certainly didn't blow her voice out on those nights. I personally can't stand Patti's voice. It's not bad, but it's not my cup of tea.
Bernadette was coughing through the role, song after song, both times I saw her.
Bernadette's voice couldn't handle that score eight times a week.
I loved Bernadette when I saw her as Rose. but I love her and had never seen Gypsy before. I had read that she took the character in different directions than the actresses before her, and I could definitely see that. she's not Ethel or Angela or Tyne.
but when I saw Patti, I realized why everyone said Bernadette was miscast. Patti made, I thought, some similar character decisions (especially in regards to sexuality; I definitely think Patti!Rose and Boyd!Herbie have sex) but I personally thought she made them better. I think Patti's voice fits the role much better, and I find Patti to be the better actress. I also think she is in the better production, with the better cast.
Don't forget that was sick for the first month of the run. She should have taken more time off so her voice could have healed better.

Uh, is this thread not exactly the same as the "Bernadette vs Patti, who is the bigger diva thread"...just checking...when did Patti/Gypsy become the new Idina/Wicked in terms of number of threads that say the same thing
In general I like Bernadette more, but I think she was a bit miscast as Rose, while Patti was born to play the part.
I know I am going off topic, but here are some random thoughts about the various productions of GYPSY:
Merman was spectacular in the first, Jerome Robbins directed GYPSY and was, IMO, the definitive singer of the score. And, Sondheim or Laurents notwithstanding, Sandra Church was a very fine Louise, very much a child in the first act, and a beautiful, take charge Gypsy Rose Lee in Act Two. Merman reportedly didn't like her, perhaps because Church spent a lot of time with Jule Styne. During the run, she was replaced by Julienne Marie, who later was in DO I HEAR A WALTZ?
Lansbury was a wonderful Rose and interestingly played and sang "Rose's Turn" differently in London and New York. In London, she played and sang it "straight"; in NY she hammered the part so hard, to let the audience know that she was indeed having a nervous breakdown. I personally thought her NY performance of "Rose's Turn" was like hitting the audience over the head with a frying pan; it was overkill to me.
I liked Tyne Daly very, very much, despite the fact that she was not the greatest singer of GYPSY. She had warmth as well as egotism, and she had tremendous stage presence, which is such a gift for an actress to have. Like Sada Thompson, I could watch and hear Daly sing the telephone book. I saw Linda Lavin in the role of Rose, in the same production and, for me, she just couldn't cut it. Lavin was a major disappointment.
Bette Midler appeared in the TV version of GYPSY and that production was very faithful to Broadway. Bonnie Walker reproduced the original Jerome Robbins choreography, and the supporting cast was very good, especially Peter Riegert as Herbie. I liked Midler a lot--I thought her "Everything's Coming Up Roses" was not as good as it should have been, but her "Rose's Turn" was fine. And that was Christine Ebersole as Tessie Tura! I like the idea of being able to put GYPSY on the TV whenever I feel like watching those wonderful vaudeville routines, especially the farmboys singing "Broadway, Broadway, I miss you so..." LOL
Bernadette Peters sang and acted well, but she was somewhat adrift in a generally cold and unlikable production. Jerome Robbins could have made a big difference here. Sam Mendes didn't give the production the right thrust.
I saw Patti LuPone on May 2nd and loved her in the part of Rose. She had the voice and had the dramatic skills to really bring the show together. Her supporting players, especially Laura Benanti as the best Louise I have ever seen, and a superb Tulsa in Tony Yazbeck, helped the show so much.
Throughout this "survey" of the different productions of GYPSY, the one common denominator is the quality of the overall production which helps to promote or detract from the impact that Rose can make on the audience. Lastly, I have left out mention of the Rosalind Russell film--I find it unwatchable, except for Paul Wallace re-creating his Tulsa from the Original Broadway Cast.
when did Patti/Gypsy become the new Idina/Wicked in terms of number of threads that say the same thing
The moment Patti was handed the role in Ravinia. American musical theatre queens had been holding their collective breath until that day finally arrived. Now that it's all over, hopefully we won't see Gypsy again for another 15 years, at least. Unless of course, some producer feels the need to do it all over again in a couple of years with Ebersole or Buckley or Jennifer Holliday. Directed by John Doyle, Julie Taymor and Graciela Daniele, respectively. My head hurts just thinking about all the renditions of Rose's Turn and Everything's Coming Up Roses we may potentially have to endure in the decades to come.
Can we please put this show to bed for a while? I need my rest.

lol, I forgot about this thread. Seems pretty stupid now.
IMO the billing should have been as such:
Patti LuPone as Rose
Bernadette Peters IS Rose
