Posted: 5/7/04 at 11:49amI wouldn't even consider the WICKED ladies for the award. Idina Menzel is fine in the first act, but the book gives her little to do in the second act. "Defying Gravity" is a great act one closer, but the rest of her songs are blah. Chenoweth is completely one note. There is no emotional shading or surprises in her performance. She calibrates her performance for laughs rather than honesty. While I was stunned by the mediocre book and songs, it was her performance that ruined it for me. The fact that she's leaving the show shortly after the Tonys may also work against her.

I too have seen all 4 ladies in their roles....and I am rooting for Donna to take the Tony. I do feel that her role is very demanding....she is constantly on that stage and gives an absolutely perfect performance, comedic and emotional. I can see why she is "beloved by the Broadway world"...her performance made me want to go see Wonderful Town again and again!

A lot of people are saying Donna, because she is the "Broadway Favorite". But remember that Marisa won last year over Bernadette Peters.
I'm really hoping that Tonya gets it. She really deserves it. (All the other ladies were wonderful, though)

Posted: 5/8/04 at 10:55amI also agree that Donna Murphy will win, however I do think it should be Idina. After just reading the book, I do think she hit Elphaba right on and gives a consistant and amazing performance. I wonder if Donna will have the same look on her face as she did when she was announced the winner over Julie Andrews???

Posted: 5/8/04 at 11:05amThe emphesis in this thread seems to be just musicals . Any opinions re straight plays? I figure Swoozie has a good shot @ it.

What is a straight play? You mean like a musical without songs? That's insane talk.

Donna Murphy - no doubt. DM is the real deal, giving a performance that will be talked about for years to come. She is absolute dynamite as Ruth Sherwood.
Assuming that DM takes it, she will have THREE Tonys for BEST ACTRESS in a MUSICAL. That is the stuff of legend. I believe that only Angela Lansbury (w/ 4 Best Actress/Musical), Gwen Verdon (w/ 3 Best Actress/Musical & 1 featured), and Mary Martin (W/ 3 Best Actress/Musical & 1 special) have achieved that up to this point. WOW!

Posted: 5/8/04 at 6:11pmI really don't think Idina will get the Tony...she is show overshadowed in Wicked by Kristen; if you recall in Ben Brantley's review all he could talk about was Kristen. So, even though everyone loves Idina, I don't think this will be hers. It could definetely be Donna's though...

Tonya is incredible in Caroline. This year it is very tough because I like every single woman up for it.
They are all winners and I am glad I am not voting.
