Best Actress in a Play nominees

There is something I find interesting about this year's Actress in a play nominees; 3 of the nominees are the ONLY nominees from their respective shows; with Heartbreak House getting an additional costume design nomination, and the Little Dog Laughed getting a best play nomination. The committee really didn't like A Moon For The Misbeggotten! No noms for Kevin Spacey, Colm Meaney or best revival (I was really surprised, actually).

I think Julie White is going to win. I love all five of these actresses. I've read that many thought Swoosie Kurtz was miscast (I disagree; I thought she was wonderful and just right for the role). My own thinking about The Year Of Magical Thinking is that it would have been better served off-broadway. Deuce might make for a nice half hour sitcom, and Angela Lansbury is always someone I enjoy seeing. Eve Best is really interesting, but I preferred Colleen Dewhurst, Kate Nelligan and Cherry Jones in the same role (memories of their performances, albeit I saw Ms. Dewhurst's on television, I would place Ms. Best in 4th place).

I really can't think of anybody who I thought was particularly "robbed" of a nomination in this category...

Well there were only something like 7 eligible performances anyway, so no one was sacrificed.

This was like Best Actress in a Musical the year Erin Dilley not nominated...filler, filler, filler.

Things are looking good for Lansbury. My money might be on her.

It's all about Ms. White this year!

Her Tony cherry will get popped this year.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

We all know she deserves it, but you all seriously think she'll win?

If her show were still running she'd win - but now I'm just not sure.

I agree with Munk. I feel like some of the Tony voters will check Angie's name off just because it is on the ballot. Julie White's performance in TLDL was brilliant and she definitely *should* win, but I'm not 100% convinced she will take home the award.

It's Angela's Tony. She's Angela Lansbury. Sure she's been better and sure she's had better material, but the out of town voters will see ANGELA LANSBURY and check it off.

Out of town voters only make up approximately 25% of the voters. It could be tight. I'm keeping the faith for Ms. White.

I don't know if the "road voters" really take their $$ into consideration when voting in the acting categories.

Lansbury would NEVER tour with the show.

I don't think Road voters are any more or less likely to vote for an actress that other people would or would not vote for.

The fact that they remembered White makes it seem more possible for her to win.

I think Juile White can win. I believe Debra Monk won for Redwood curtain and that closed before the tony's

re: Best Actress in a Play nominees

Just a question: don't voters know that Angela Lansbury has four tony awards? Her play got poor reviews - it's rare for an actor or an actress to win in the lead categories with a play that is critically disliked... Eve Best and Julie White are the ony nominees in the category who have not gotten tonys before (this being their first year as nominees). I think Julie White is a LOCK for best actress personally...

Ironically, the lead actor category is comprised of all previous winners; I think Frank Langella will win his 3rd - I just hope they don't give it to that boring Liev Shreiber performance... (just my opinion, offer your own without attacking mine)...

Well, I for one would LOVE to see Eve Best win. I'd take Vanessa Redgrave too. Both are staggering and heartbreaking in their portrayals.

I feel the Best Play nomination for TLDL shows strong enough support to warrant a Julie White win...

FOA, great pic!

I don't think I need to reiterate how much I'm pulling for White to win. I'm afraid Lansbury will, on sheer sentiment alone, even though she already has a mantelfull.
