Ok, ok, i'm sure someone on this board is gonna yell at me and say that i should look at the reviews on this site, but in YOUR opinion, what is the best hotel to stay at when going to the city to catch some theater in terms of:
comfort
staff friendliness
appearance
location
PRICE!!!
My personal favorites have always been the Marriot marquis (can't beat the location) and the Algonquin.
Any terrible hotel experiences you care to share are always interesting to hear about too!
I wasn't thrilled with the Algonquin. Sure, the history is fascinating but the room was tiny (even by New York standards) and worst of all, there was an ant invasion in the bathroom. I found the room to be in much need of a renovation too.
My personal favorite was the Doubletree Times Square.
Maybe the reason why I enjoyed the Algonquin was because we had to get a suite since there were 5 people, so we had a bunch of rooms, which probably made the stay mre enjoyable
In terms of location I liked the Marriott Marquis best. Right in Time Square, really comfortable, and very convienant if you see a show and the Marquis Theatre.
At a close seond place is the Doubletree Time Square. It has more space than the Marriott and is more comfortable. However, I liked the location of the Marquis better only because I didn't have to cross 7th avenue and broadway to get to the side of the street with all the theatres I was going to.
BwayFanatic, if I had a suite at the Algonquin, I probably would've liked my stay more too!

I liked the Royalton. Friendly staff, clean and quiet rooms.

My favorite place to stay is the Westin. It isn't right in Times Square but it is beautiful.
Yea I just got back from New York yesterday, and we stayed in the Westin. It was a great location for the shows I saw! Pretty nice too.
I stayed at the Crown Plaza and loved it!
I also liked the Westin
All 4 of us stayed at the Doubletree Times Square during Spring Break week and it couldn't have been better. Great staff, great location and free to me with my points earned on a credit card!
And the warm cookies were delish!
I love the Algonquin for convenience and cosy-ness (yes the rooms are small and it is very expensive these days), I also like the Peninsula.
I don't know if anyone else has had this experience at the Marquis, but it took about 25 minutes to get down the elevator one day. It was so bad that one night, I walked down 31 flights of stairs! Other than that, I loved the hotel!
If budget was a consideration, I have a few choices. I am on a year long business trip to NYC and everytime a sublet is over I stay in a hotel. I could stay anywhere, but wanted to try out the different budget hotels for future personal use. If I was going to go to NYC and needed to stay near Broadway. My #1 choice would be the Milford. It's dated, there's no express check out, but the rooms are large and the price is always the cheapest between $150 - $229. Another choice, The Night on 45th, Hotel QT across the street from Night. It has an above ground pool in the lobby with a hot happening bar, the Paramount, rooms are small, but the location is great. If you're going pay for the Marriott Marquis, you might as well pay for the Millenium at 44th and get a great view of the City or the Novetel with awesome views of Broadway from the rooms and a resturaunt looking towards Times Square.

Just stayed at the Hampton on 51st/8th. Price was right: rooms were clean and BIG, cookies/apples/coffee/tea/hot chocolate in the lobby 24hrs, friendly staff, good location, and FREE breakfast. All in all a great value.
I liked the Sheraton Manhattan: 51st and 7th Ave (not to be confused with the Sheraton New York across the street at 53rd) I got a great internet special rate (about $100 cheaper than Marquis) and one free $25 meal voucher. Quieter than Times Sq, room was clean and had a view west down 51st to Neil Simon: Hairspray and Wilson: Jersey Boys theatres.
Oh yes, one more thing. Staff was friendly and housekeeping was NOT vacuuming the hallway at 7am like some places I've stayed.
I've always stayed at the Crowne Plaza-the location is the best. Not the greatest staff at times, but its not bad. I recently stayed at the Residence Inn--its a newer place and its over on 38th and 6th I think. The rooms are all suites, the staff could not have been nicer and they have a wonderful lounge area where in the mornings there is a free breakfast and apparently in the evenings there is food too (depending on what day of the week it is). I went with the Residence Inn because the Crowne Plaza was too expensive.

I have good rates booked at both the Hampton Inn at 51 & 8th and the Hilton Garden Inn at 48 & 8th. Is one better than the other?
Thanks
one more vote for the Westin :)
double post
70 park avenue hotel is where I stay. It is a 20 minute walk to the theatres but - I enjoy walking in NYC. I did stay one night at The Roosevelt Hotel in Times Square because they were offering theatre packages with 5th row center seats to Tarzan. The hotel was clean and nice and you can't beat the location for theatre going. Tarzan on the other hand...
Another vote for the Hampton Inn on 51st and 8th. Great value and spacious rooms. Just a warning: their bed pillows have little head support so bring your own if you're a picky sleeper (like me).
Miflord Plaza it is cheaper (but still NY prices) and right there. Also if you come to the city on the buss it is a relativley short walk.

Love the Hampton Inn....but def bring your own pillow! :)
The Hilton Garden Inn is another Hilton Property just like the Hampton....apparently it is newly rennovated as well. I think either would be a good bet...both are within a block or so of eachother and the amenties, etc are pretty much the same
