I've stayed many times at The Edison Hotel which is a lovely Art Decoish place! The rooms are great, there is a nice restaurant! And the view is nice as well!

I love the Sofitel, The Time, Marriot Marquis and Rhiga Royal (not on Broadway but a short walk) The Paramount was nice if you get a superior room (not a standard) and has by far one of the best hotel gyms.

The Westin over the Marriott. Awesome views, pleasant staff, heavenly beds. Close to the diner and late night pizza.

On a budget, try The Mayfair. Great views of brick walls, but that also means the room is pitch black when the lights are out. Unfortunately in the recent remodel they went overboard with the toile wallpaper and bedding, but hey, when the light are out it's pitch black in there! It's one place where you can get a cheaper rate by calling vs. over the internet.

On a budget, go with the Edison or the Mayfair. The Milford Plaza is a dump. Tiny, dank rooms, elevators that work sporadically, narrow hallways, not very clean, poor service, even the lobby is sketchy.

I've stayed at the Washington Jefferson Hotel af ew times. It's generally inexpensive but the rooms are REALLY small. Unbelieveably small. As for the Milford Plaza, I've stayed there several times in the last couple of years and every room has been recently renovated. Most of the corridors are NOT narrow and I'm not sure what the problem was with the lobby that the poster inferred.

I've stayed at the Waldorf Astoria, the Plaza, the Westin, the Muse, The Time, and the Super 8 on 46th.

Out of all those, my favorite has always been the Time, though meeting Ben Harper in the elevator might have pushed it to the top of the list. It's a little trendy hotel, but very convenient. There are two elevators, one for the rooms, and one to the lobby. You don't ever have to go through the lobby except for during check in and out, which is probably what makes it a hot spot for celebrities. The beds were AMAZINGLY comfortable.

For the expense, the Waldorf and Plaza (sadly gone now) were overrated.

I think that Sofitel is the best. It is very nice, and is right next to the Algonquin, which is right next to the Belasco theater.

On my first trip to NYC, I stayed on the top floor of the Marriot Marquis overlooking the Coke sign. It was magical! But that was in 1993 when I was a freshman in high school.

My last trip - two years ago -- I actually stayed at 3 hotels during my stay!!! I booked the Belvedere. It was a large room for an amazing price, but the bathroom door hit the toilet (so small!!!). I next moved to the Park Central, but it was worse! I was placed in a room on the 5th floor overlooking the air conditioners. Paint was peeling from the wall and an outlet was hanging from its socket. Plus a maintenance man walked into the room without knocking!
Then, I moved to the Novotel. It's a pretty nice place! The lobby is on the eighth floor (or thereabouts). For the price I was paying (through Hotels.com), I was placed on the 22nd floor with a nice view of the river. It seems like a very international hotel. There was a French radio station that played through the TV. Plus, it’s kid friendly. I asked for extra towels and they gave us a huge amount that lasted the next week! Plus, it’s next door to Hairspray and lots of other shows!

Hope you get a nice hotel for the right price!!!!

Finally, someone mentioned my favorite the Renaissance Hotel in Times Sq.
Never have to wait for an elevator like the Marquis.
Much smaller.
Staff is great.
Free snacks in the bar each night with show music on the piano most nights. Sometimes sushi.
Plus...they allow DOGS!!!

ThankstoPhantom

Milford Plaza is a great deal! It's nice, and less expensive.

Last time we were in NY, we were supposed to stay at a certain hotel, but a floor of theirs' heating system had broken down. They sent us off to the Blakely, one of the most beautiful, tiny (but not in terms of rooms), comfortable, and friendly hotels...it was a five minute walk to the Marquis (I believe it was on 58th, the hotel that is). We stayed for our original hotel's price of $125, but the normal price is about $300!!! So here's my advice...if they ever need to send you somewhere else, request the Blakely, you won't regret it! Best hotel experience for my mother and I, ever.

How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...

I stayed at the Edison when I went 2 years ago and we're staying there again when we go this month. I've never stayed anywhere else in NYC so I have nothing to compare it too. But I thought it was nice. My grandmother really liked the restaurant.

I love the Quality Inn Times Square, its fairly priced and like a two second walk from the heart of Times Square and is right across the street from the Palace Theater and is such a lovely place and has such nice people who work their and I've never had a more enjoyable stay than there.

Milford was very nice. My aunt lost her clothes while staying there because we had to leave quickly because I fell ill, but it was still yet its very close to many Broadway shows (Avenue Q, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels... etc.)

Hope that helps.

I completely recommend The Belvedere. It is right near everything, but just off on a side street so not noisy at all. The staff is wonderful and very accomodating (they let us check in early since our bus got in ahead of schedule). Your room is stocked with a small fridge and a microwave, so if you feel like a couple less expensive meals, you can go to to the store around the corner and grab some microwaveable meals. The rooms are a decent size for a reasonable price. I woudn't stay anywhere else next time I go back.

I agree with those who said the Hampton Inn (51st & 8th). They were very friendly there and quite helpful. Their ticket concierge got us great seats for Sweeney Todd the night of the performance at the price of TKTS (and without the 2 hour line!). It has a great location, it's close to Times Square, and every Broadway Theatre is at a walkable distance (though it did take awhile to get to the Nederlander).

Now, however, there's construction right next door. When I was there, it was near 24/7 construction. It was quite annoying, but once that's done, it's a great place to stay (and the free breakfast and all-day free coffee isn't so bad either).

Has anyone here ever stayed at the Hudson Hotel on 58th? Hotels.com say it's very artsy-dartsy but has teensy rooms - even by NY standards. Any personal experience?
