Since I am tourist on my trips to NYC I usually ask the person if they are from the city or out-of-town like me. I often attend the shows by myself too, and I amazed how delightfully nice everyone is before the show.

' Are you going to eat that?' jk. Normally I just ask the person next to me( or for that matter, anyone i see) how they found out about whatever show we're at. i find it intersesting how they got word of the show. Actually, thinking back, i might have asked the guy next to me at Curtains if he was going to finish his M&Ms at the intermission.

I like playin with lightbulbs. Plug 15 3-bulb circuits into one extension cord, flip the switch and *POOF*. Smoke machine.

Aww. If I were sitting next to you at a show, I'd leave you alone. re: Best Conversation Starters at Shows?

I rarely start conversations at shows. If someone starts speaking with me, I'll respond, but if I wanted to spend the evening chatting with strangers, I'd go to a bar instead.

(parks)

and then they ask me if I'm an actor, apparently I look like one, or just gay so they assume...so then I tell them my life story, cause who doesn't wanna hear all about ME? I feel bad for people sitting next to me.

If you really want to break some ice, try these:

"Don't be afraid to use the armrest; that disgusting fungus is now only on my feet."
"I'm seeing this show tonight in celebration of being STD-free!"
"Now, I may need to make a mad dash out of my seat tonight. You see, I've been throwing up constantly for the past 2 days..."
"I've never seen this show before...with underwear on!"
"Oh, please don't mind any random outbursts. They just changed my medication."
"How long do you suppose it would take the NYPD to hunt down an escaped convict?"

...And so, there I was at the stage door for "Equus". The enthused avalanche of "Harry Potter" fans was literally pushing me into the barricades. As I was thrust face-first into Daniel Radcliffe's hat, I suddenly felt the thumb of a lanky gentleman behind me pressing firmly into my back. It was then that I realized that both of his hands had Playbills, and that both arms were outstretched in front of me...

Why would you want to? I mean, sometimes it's nice just to look through the playbill, settle in and get ready for the show. Why this need to talk with people not even in your group?

I often start these conversations BECAUSE I go to theater by myself. I live in Memphis and really don't know many actors or theater buffs here. I love to seek those out, and on my trip last week, I met really delightful young actors who enjoyed sharing their experiences with me.

I tried the "please stop texting during the show, wait till intermission because it is distracting!" a couple times. Once it got me into a discussion on how a woman's child was critically ill and she had to text (a nice conversation started on how , if her child was that ill what the hell was she doing in the theatre annoying people), another time was met with a dead silence and a glare. Go figure!

I go by myself too. But I like to take it in on my own. I had a guy try to start up a whole conversation in the FIVE MINUTES before Gypsy started one time and was completely frustrated. I was running later than I usually like and had very little time to settle in from my regular life to get mentally ready for entering into the show. I tolerated him...but moved to another seat at intermission.

Not everyone WANTS to talk.

*edit to add* Now, are there times when I will talk? Sure. But I NEVER go thinking "OMG, I'm all alone! I HAVE to talk to someone!!" I guess I'm more comfortable with silence than others though.

Well, for those of us who get to the theater 30 minutes before the show starts, there is only so much to read in the Playbill. I figure that most people have common sense and know when a person doesn't want to talk and will cease the conversation.

And this is why I have no fewer than three books on me at any one time. If I exhaust - or have already read - the Playbill, then I have an array of other things to keep me busy without putting me at the mercy of strangers. re: Best Conversation Starters at Shows?

I always end up sitting by the weirdest people and sometimes they are just rude.
