Why doesn't Melanie Griffith appear on anyone's list?

Kenna Ramsey - Joanne first national Tour RENT (in Los Angeles with wilson cruz and Neil patrick harris) Damn can she belt

Sharon Brown - First black woman to play Lucy in Jeckyll and Hyde, Effie Dreamgirls, Second Female Narrator right after Laurie Beechman. Damn can that woman blow the roof off. Flat out BELT.

No one has mentioned Donna Murphy. She has a great voice. As well as Joanna Gleason (I don't think anyone mentioned her)?

Donna has a nice voice indeed. Belt? Not really.

(That would be Emily being a big black woman poser in Merrily We Roll Along... "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!" *points to Flaemmchen*)

I can't believe you put up a picture of Emily and Alice and listed Alice as one of the best female belters and not Emily. That's... beyond me. LOL.

I'm still waiting to be enlightened on how Alice is actually a belter? I'm still so confused on the matter, because everything I've ever heard Alice sing, she either...

A. Sings it legit.

or

B. Screams.

Screaming isn't a "controlled yell..."

Am I completely off base or does anyone else agree? And if not, what is everyone seeing that I'm not??? I'm honestly not trying to stir up debate. I've just been flustered for a LONG time on how Alice is considered to be one of the "greatest belters" because I've never once heard her 'belt.'

My favorites:

Emily Skinner
Becky Norman
Jennifer Holiday
Julia Murney
Carolee Carmello

Sutton Foster, she can belt with the best of them, but she's so much more. She also has the pretiest voice I ever heard anywhere.

I forgot Mary Testa! yup yup

As for Alice and Emily Miss Daisy Hilton, I love them both

I love Alice better
and you love Ems better

There's no getting around that.

I have NO doubt that Ems is talented and can belt, my mistake for not adding her, it's just I haven't had the privilege of hearing Ems live, and i've seen Alice three times.

Is there something I could listen to from a recording of Ems that will knock my socks off?

I love Ems in
Celebrate
Leave Me Alone
Solid Silver Platform Shoes
Tunnel of Love

but to me her range doesn't compare to what they give Alice, THAT'S WHY I'm partial to Alice.

Tell me to listen to something of hers that can blow Alice away vocal wise and key wise. Thanks

ofcourse, after seeing Melanie Grifith's performance the other night I couldn't hesitate to put her on here as one of broadway's strongest female belters ever!

I was stunned to hear when they raised Funny Honey two steps higher and she belted "look at him goooo rat, rattin on meeee!" she definitely rivaled Ruthie Henshall.

I would think he was being serious if he didn't say "rivaled Ruthie Henshall." lol That tipped me off right there that he was not being serious. I have not yet seen Melanie myself.

I'm not saying you can't FAVOR Alice... that wasn't my question. You have EVERY right to love Alice. It's not a competition. I just don't understand how you can categorize her as a "belter" when I've never heard her do what I've understood to be 'belting.' Perhaps I'm missing something. That's all I asked you to explain... not to compare Emily and Alice, because they're totally different talents.

As for Emily... erm... I dunno. First, you need to see her perform live in something. You also must get your hands on a copy of Merrily We Roll Along, but that can be discussed through PM. :)

Bebe Neuwirth.-Don't hit me!

Of course I don't mean to put her in the same 'belting high C's' catagory. But I just mean the sheer power of her lungs sometimes, combined with how deep her voice is makes for a great belt sometimes.

But going with the thread so far...

Marin Mazzie
Sutton Foster
Jenifer Holiday
Vicki Lewis
Susan Egan
Roxane Carrasco
Donna Murphy (I've heard her belt, not on Broadway. In an episode of What About Joan, but that's good enough for me.)
Ruthie Henshall
Sheryl Lee Ralph
Patti LuPone
Caroline O'Connor
Barbra Steisand (Used to be.)

"In a really well-written musical, you talk until you just can't talk anymore, you're going to have to sing. And when you're just so full you can't sing anymore, then you have to dance. It's a natural progression." ~Bebe Neuwirth
