where's the Daphne Rubin-Vega love?? that chica can SING...
Is she a "belter"? I've never considered her one. She's got a very interesting voice but if I'm not mistaken, no belt.

I think it's so weird that someone wouldn't consider Alice a belter! Just take a listen to Tunnel Of Love from Sideshow. Esp. the part when she says "I want mine, where is mine". It amazes me every time I hear it.
I agree with most all the other listed, but how about Claire Moore? I think she's a great belter. Also Coleen Sexton

*sigh* I swore I wouldn't revisit this, but everyone keeps saying, "How can you say Alice isn't a BELTER?"
To me, all I *hear* when she's "belting" is screaming. That's not belting. I hear a fast vibrato that is in some major need of constraints. It sounds shrill to my ears... I don't find it enjoyable. I MUCH prefer her "pretty voice" to what some consider to be her "belt". I just prefer Emily's rich quality, whether she's belting or not. It's a more classic belt. A fuller, chesty belt. That's what the belters of the past (as some have mentioned) were known for. It just seems that the talent of "belters" today is measured by just how HIGH one can belt, even if it's not enjoyable to listen to.
Give me Emily or Jennifer Holiday any day over half those mentioned. Those girls can BLOW! :)

Daisy, I agree with you about Alice. I am a fan but I've never considered her as having a "rich" belt. It's Emily that has the goods that way. Imo, Alice does have a shrill sound and an overdeveloped vibrato.

Linzi Hately and Betty Buckley belt like no ones business in the hot musical that swept all the awards that year! CARRIE.
Actually they do sound fabulous on the duets.
Anth,
You are really killing me with the Jessica Simpson "jokes".

Thank YOU, Al Dente. I *knew* someone had to eventually see/hear what I'm seeing/hearing. I'm glad I'm not losing my mind. :)
I really DO adore Alice, I just find Emily's voice so much more pleasant to listen to in general. Alice's vibrator wears at my nerves after a while.
Daisy,
I don't know what you're doing with Alice's vibrator, but my goodness that is just unhygienic!!!!
Hasen't any woman who has ever sung on B'way been mentioned on this thread yet?
My choice: Elaine Stritch...she could sure belt a few...and still sing!

HAHAHAHA! OMG... whoops... I was having a Freudian moment!
"...It's not that you stole my vibrator without asking, it's the WHOLE DAMN relationship!"
It's like the community vibrator!

BETTY BUCKLEY....A TOTAL HERO!
Betty Buckley has one of the mosy amazing belt voices I have EVER HEARD. All I can think of is what she did with the the song "memory" in Cats and Norma in Sunset and it sends shivers up my spine...voice of SILK!
