Republic of Myopia. Go find it. Also, Shout! - OCRs exist of both.

I'd say Eureka but that'd be impossible to find re: Best Musicals Not Many People Have Heard Of...

Do check out CLOSER THAN EVER (RCA Victor) - a revue of two dozens songs by Shire and Maltby, and not a dog in the collection. Some truly stunning litle one-act musicals here!

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Man I love all these shows mentioned here in this thread. I have done Rags, and Falsettos, and those are two of my favorite shows. Played Nathan in Rags, and Marvin in Falsettos. I would love to do Man of No Importance. Try Romance/Romance, there are a few good songs in there. Also I Love You You're Perfect Now Change. There are two songs that I did in a version of The Little Prince that I just adore, but I can't remember the composer. I will write more when I think of some more.

Hurrah, I got one!
Well, granted it is an Aussie musical. So there ya go. Anyway I got my copy at middle8music and it's great - I missed the show since it was only done in Sydney, about a year and a half ago now. I can upload a couple of the songs off the cd if anyone's interested...but it's certainly good enough to go and buy :)

...and somehow, posting a hyperlink hates me. so here. http://www.middle8.com/mem/product.asp?pID=2678&cID=360&scID=613

FalsettosFan,

I loved Mail. Amazing to realize that it was Brian Stokes Mitchell's first show.

The Spitfire Grill. Great music, but unfortunatley, it only got to off-broadway and never made it to broadway. But is still great!

You must remember all the same that at the crux of every game is knowing when it's time to leave the table... And it's important to be artful in your exit. No turning back, you must accept the con is done... It was a ball, it was a blast. And it's a shame it couldn't last. But every chapter has to end, you must agree.

There's a special kind of people known as show people. We live in a world full of dreams. Sometimes we're not too certain what's false and what's real. But we're seldom in doubt about what we feel.

It is a far, far better thing I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest I go to, than I have ever known.

I haven't seen The Last Five Years but I have heard of it!

Here's a few more, not sure if they're unknown or if it's just that no one mentions them:

The Venetian Twins (hilarious)
Summer Rain
Lola Montez
Prodigan Son
Joe Starts Again
Paris

Two new ones to watch out for:
Rosie
A Bunch of Ratbags

Prettybelle
Canterbury Tales
Eating Raoul
A Doll's Life
Lucky Stiff
Metropolis
Metro (only recording is in Polish)
Moby Dick

Not sure if you are looking for obscure shows (above) that were not on B'way, or classic shows that you might not know about....like Falsettos and Two Gentlemen of Verona...two classics everyone should have.

Try "Lizzie Borden" -- some really beautiful songs there.
You can find the CD through Amazon.com.
If you're in the mood for something off the wall,
"Ruthless" is fun.
