BY MY SIDE is the best, but if you add BEAUTIFUL CITY into the show from the movie, as a lot of theatres do, It becomes a close second!
on the willows!! I can't believe no one has mentioned that. it is a beautiful song.
I agree with Light Of The World, and am also partial to "On The Willows"---it's hard to pick the best from a musical that's chock full or great songs!
Rath: I don't understand your qualms. The question wasn't "what is your favorite song," it is evidently "what do you think is the best song." To me, when I think about the best written song - lyrics and music - "By My Side" is what comes to mind. It also happens to be my favorite - but often times BEST doesn't mean FAVORITE.

Thanks, Pippin!
On the Willows is so obviouslly the essential number...blends Biblical text with emotional appeal...simply perfect.
LIGHT OF THE WORLD is the most fun to perform.
When we did Godspell, we did all the music based on the 2001 touring cast version, and it was a lot of fun using those versions of the songs. We did the techno BABBLE and all. (But kept TURN BACK O MAN as the original)
But LIGHT is probally my favorite in the show.
In what productions is "Beautiful City" used/not used? I know it's on the 2001 tour recording, what about the others? Is it generally included in regional productions nowadays? I think it's a great song.

My favorite is Bless The Lord. I just <3 Sho. She has such an amazing voice. I'm obsessed with all of her riffs in that song!
ljay, did you know anyone on that tour? I think I do, but not sure....
My vote goes to "We Beseech Thee"
I stage managed this show in college and had a very educational and frustrating time. It can be absolutely beautiful. Great show!

I think "Save the People" is the best, I love the style in which it's written, and most of the arrangements of it I have heard have been really amazing.
I'm also a big fan of how the finale is written, and often performed (particularly on the 2000 Off-Bway recording). Very powerful.

BEAUTIFUL CITY was used in a regional theatre production I saw as well as a Community Theatre version. I worked with this community theatre and they had to ask permission to do so. I'm not sure if you can get the rights to the 2001 tour which has it in it or not... But when you see it on stage it will stop your heart! Absolutely Breathtaking!

I'm not sure about the history but I know it was added for the MOVIE!
Yes, Beautiful City (from the movie version) is a personal favorite of mine. Can't say that I like the "newer" version of it. Every time I did "Godspell" we opted to put this song in.
I love the movie soundtrack.
Bless the Lord and We Beseech Thee. I played robin and sang Day By Day but it wasn't my favorite (although Shoshana sings it well)
Another vote for "By My Side".
I also like "Day By Day".

A definite vote for "Learn Your Lessons Well."
I am partial to the one in the 2000 off-Broadway cast recording
