I saw Bette Midler in concert last night. It's the fourth tour of hers I have seen and each tour is even better than the one before.
I am constitutionally against printing spoilers, especially for fans who haven't seen the show yet. (And those of you who have never seen her live who think it's all about, well, say, Sutton or whoever's playing Aida now, please take note and see how it's DONE!) However, having said that, let me give a three-word preview that will strike joy in the hearts of Bette fans and musical lovers everywhere. (Don't read if you don't want to know!)
ready?
Okay, here goes:

Bette's a Number One entertainer.
I've seen a number of her concerts going back to CLAMS ON A HALF SHELL in the mid 70s soon after moving to NYC.
She's also a nice lady who personally replied to an enthusiastic fan many clams ago.
Yours for true entertainers on Broadway!

And she's not afraid to GET POLITICAL on this tour. I'm sure you'd LOVE it Bulldog.
FYI kids, Kamilah Martin (RENT, Hairspray) is one of the new Harlettes; Bette's girls.

Bette and I go way back Namo. I know how political she can be. But so does my neighbor Alec B. and it it doesn't bother me either.

I adore Bette.
I am very jealous of you. When will she be in NYC?
I had a dream that she played EDNA on Broadway.
She would be incredible! (In Hairspray)
She does great work for NYC with NYC Parks.

I saw her last weekend in Wilkes Barre. It was incredible. That was the first time I had the chance to see her in concert and it was just amazing. She is a true performer in every sense!

We're probably never going to see the likes of another Bette. She has all the production elements, the dancing and the singing. I mean, other performers have the sets and the dancing but they add all those bells and whistles to distract from the fact that they either aren't singing but lip synching or can't sing in the first place.
But then in the numbers where there is nothing but her voice and her interpretations of the songs, her essence comes through and it's 100% star quality.
On this tour, not only is she a gifted pop interpreter, but during (minor spoilers if you don't want to know what songs she performs on tour) "Keep on Rocking" and "When a Man Loves a Woman" she becomes a GENUINE rock star!
Don't you think she would be a fantastic Edna in Hairspray!

I am so excited. I have tickets for both her Vegas and Los Angeles engagements. I have one question Namo... Is the show large enough that one doesn't feel they miss that much from seats way up there? I have great seats in Los Angeles... but I am taking my lover to the Vegas engagement and all they had was second floor seating. Updated On: 1/3/04 at 12:48 PM

The show is quite large. I had very very good seats, I wasn't even in the line of sight of the video screens stage side or above the arena floor, which I assume was helpful to the people on the upper levels. I think the "less expensive" (but still expensive) seats would be fine, with the screens showing facial nuance.
How much are the tickets?

Corrine, you're a savvy Internet girl. You can find out this information.
Fine. Thought you could give a link.
I can't go anyway. I will be away.

You know how to find links. You're a smart Independent Woman ("all the honeys making money, throw your hands up at me"), you're not a helpless girl!
Found it.
Trying for the 18th.
A girl I work with is seeing Bette at Naussau (sp?) Collesium tonight...and I'm seeing the Divine Miss M on January 17th at Madison Sqaure Garden! I'm so excited! I may still try and get tickets for the 18th as well

Try not to let your friend tell you too much about it, because there are some things that are worth being surprised by. (Wait til you see Delores).

A woman playing Edna will take away A LOT of the jokes...a man is meant to play the role.

She would be great, indeed, but like I said...it would ruin the whole role.

Why not she would be incredible.
Her and Harvey. Oh my god it would be DIVA HEAVEN.
