Bette Midler's GYPSY
Bette Midler's GYPSY#0
Posted: 3/17/05 at 9:58pmJust bought the DVD. Before I watch it, what did you guys think of it?
re: Bette Midler's GYPSY#1
Posted: 3/17/05 at 10:00pmI love Gypsy as a whole, so I find it enjoyable. Although Bette is truly horrible in the acting department. She's so campy and over-the-top. But it's pretty good nonetheless. And her vocals are fine.

I agree about Bette sounding good. I also agree about her bad acting. I don't get how she lost touch. Bette used to be so right on.
Now I wish I had seen Angela. I grew up with her recording and still love it best.

Posted: 3/18/05 at 4:32pmI thought she was over the top, glorious, sexy, entrancing and absolutely wonderful as Rose. She received a richly deserved emmy nomination for GYPSY, and had received the emmy award the prior year for her appearance as Johnny Carson's final guest.

'Although Bette is truly horrible in the acting department.'
You were expecting Streep?
The Divine Ms. M is truly fabulous, but she never was the subtlest of actresses!

I agree. I loved Miss Midler in GYPSY. I am glad that it is finally out on DVD. I am a huge fan and I usually love her in anything. Would love to see her in MAME. I am not too crazy about Peter Reigert as Herby, though.

Posted: 3/18/05 at 4:41pmThis was the first Gypsy I knew, so I still love it. Although, once I got exposed to the show more, nothing beats the OBC with Merm.

Posted: 3/18/05 at 4:41pmrobbiej, I agree with you one hundred percent......Not subtle acting, but what a honeycomb singing voice. She also brought a sense of joy to certain parts of the performance that are often not there.........I thought the divine Miss M was divine as Rose.

Don't get me wrong...it's not a prejorative.
I, myself, have never known a subtle moment as an actor.

As you watch it, remember that Bette and her co-star Peter Riegert once lived together. Linda Hart (Mazeppa) was one of the Harlettes, Bette's backup singers, in the 1970's.
Also watch for all the great Broadway people: Michael Jeter, Andrea Martin, Christine Ebersole, Anna McNeely, Keene Curtis
re: Bette Midler's GYPSY#11
Posted: 3/18/05 at 4:56pmI just found Bette awful in the role (and I like her) - and it was so badly directed...here comes a musical number, Ms Midler - just step up to the camera lenz and forget everyone else is in the scene with you - stand center and belt your lungs out. sheesh....
re: Bette Midler's GYPSY#12
Posted: 3/18/05 at 4:58pm^^ LOL. Sounds just like what Bernadette did. Ugh.
re: Bette Midler's GYPSY#13
Posted: 3/18/05 at 4:59pmI agree that it was terribly directed, but I found Bette to be fantastic, and much better than Ros Russell in the original, which in my opinion, is pretty unwatchable.

I think Roz's acting in the role was terrific, but there ARE those pesky songs that got in her way! :)
If only Judy could have done the movie -- it would have been brilliant!

Posted: 3/18/05 at 5:04pmMother's Younger Brother------ah yes..........the genius of Judy as Rose would have indeed been a gift to us all.
