"TOO MANY MUSICALS GEARED AT CHILDREN. WHAT HAS BROADWAY COME TOO?"
Besides a source of fans with bad spelling and grammar, it's also dragged back the "cartoons are for kids" mentality. As pointed out by other posters, the original Betty Boop cartoons were surrealist and sexy and for adults as lead films to major pictures.
Hell, the reason why the original Warner Brothers cartoons, not to mention shows like Animaniacs and the Muppet Show, were so awesome is because they managed to combine simple visuals with highly intelligent and adult humour (by which I mean mature, not crass.) This *could* be good. I certainly hope it is.

Posted: 11/8/08 at 9:23amYou never know if something like this is going to go the way of Annie or Raggedy Ann. I think the only way for it to succeed is to make it a real star vehicle, and not just something they stuff anyone into, but really write a piece to showcase a particular persons talents.

I think it's got tremendous potential. Let's not forget that Betty Boop was a flapper girl. I'm envisioning a scene in a speakeasy with everyone doing the charleston and gangsters at tables. She was also very sexually free and politically active (she ran for president in one) with many of her cartoons pushing against social mores of the time (several were banned). This is not necessarily aimed at the Disney audience. There could be an opportunity here for smart social commentary, political relevance, and female empowerment all while being extremely entertaining (with song and dance and talking inanimate objects, how can it not?).
Thank god it's not a musicalization of a recent hit movie.

I'm envisioning a Thoroughly Modern Millie meets Caroline, Or Change and with a sorta Charlie Brown hyper-reality.
and I agree LaCheno would be awesome

"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott

"I wonder if, in addition to the new songs, we'll see some of the "staples" like "I Wanna Be Loved By You" or "I Wanna Be Bad". "
Except Betty never sang those--Helen Kane who Betty was modeled on but I think actually tried to sue Fleischer, sang it...
