There has been a lot of talk of Ave. Q beating Wicked as a upset, what are some other upsets? I'd say last year Marissa beating BP was an upset. WHat is the biggest Tony upset ever??
It was a pretty boring night upset wise until the end. Maybe Henry 1V beating A Raisin in the Sun was a bit of an upset, but not totally.

I dont know about ever, but for me, personally, it was "LK" beating "Ragtime".

The biggest upset ever was Sissy Spacek in "Coal Miners Daughter" beating out Mary Tyler Moore in "Ordinary People".
Biggest upset for me was not going to the Tonys.
Biggest upset for me was Never Gonna Dance closing before I got a chance to see it and knowing that there will not be a Cd made of it.

I cried when LK beat Ragtime. Terrible. And the fact Brian Stokes-Mitchell didn't win that year either killed me. Who won that year in the Lead Actor category, anybody remember ? Was it Alan Cumming ?
And PLEASE don't even get me started on the ridiculous MJW win from last year. Didn't get how someone who can't sing won a Tony. It boggles the mind, it really does.

For me it was Millie Beating Urinetown
In 1991 THE SECRET GARDEN, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND and MISS SAIGON were all candidates for Best Musical. You know who the winner was? THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES!!! HUH?!

Certainly all three of the above deserved BEST SCORE over the trite, imitative Will Rodgers score. Cy Coleman had won the previous year for CITY OF ANGELS - he didn't need two in a row.
If you ask the oldsters, they will always bring up TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA beating FOLLIES in 1971. But another show that year,a little thing called GREASE, went on to become the longest running show on Broadway (until A CHORUS LINE beat it).
I don't think LK beating Ragtime could be called an upset - just a gross injustice. Ditto Millie over Urinetown.
Winokur beating Peters. A woman I doubt we'll be hearing from again, anytime soon...if we're lucky.
Personal upsets I have seen...

Marissa Janet Winokour(sp??) over Bernadette Peters. I mean MJW cant even sing!?! Especially disapointing after BP performed Rose's Turn pretty damm well. Also Lion King over Ragtime. Lion King is one of the most overrated musicals, Ragtime was wonderful. Nine over Gypsy last year, I didnt think nine was that great.

Biggest upset ever.....
Harvey "can't even talk much less sing" over Brian Stokes Mitchell's show stopping performance of Don Quixote last year. After that show I lost all faith in the Tony's... This year has sealed the deal, applauding childish crude puppets over one of the most incredible shows in recent history, Wicked.
Loved NINE. Loved GYPSY too. Had seen the Tyne outing and this version was much better. It sparkled alright but I vote for NINE.
The biggest of all time has to be Lion King over Ragtime. Ridiculous.
This year: I think Jeanine Tesori's music in Caroline was upset by the Avenue Q score. I love the Q music but it doesn't come close to the sophistication of Jeanine's work.
I saw both The Lion King and Ragtime shortly after the Tonys and I was WOWED by The Lion King and underwhelmed by Ragtime. I think Ragtime has a better book and score, but the staging was too inconsistent and the choreography (what little there was) was mostly bland and uninspired. The Lion King's incredible designs and staging as well as the brilliant choreography are what put it over the top. The visual aspect of the show was impossible to ignore as well as the sumptuous new music added to the score. Ragtime will no doubt be revived and hopefully, it will get the production it deserves. I'm a fan of the show, but not of the Broadway production.
Harvey "can't talk much less sing". Ok. His voice maybe sounding a little bit strangled these days but there are very few people who would disagree with his win for Hairspray. His performance was quite quite wonderful.

Raul not winning was the most upset of the night i was crying in my seat
Oh please. Raul not winning was not an UPSET. Michael Cerveris was written about all over town as the favorite to win.
I think you don't understand between being upset and feeling upset.
Ah youth!
hahaha I love how it has now been over a year, and we are STILL talking about how unfair it was for Marissa to win over Bernadette. lol Classic. Though I must say, that was one hell of a Tony upset.
For this year's Tonys, I was happy Avenue Q did so well. In fact, it was interesting to see how much the awards were spread out. There was really no big sweep this year. I was very happy for Idina Menzel. A little sad for Taboo, but if they had won, Best Leading Actress in a Musical would have been the only award Wicked would have received. Because the lighting and costumes in Taboo were great. Good for Wicked though.
Okay, biggest upsets from this year IMHO:
>Isabelle Keating losing Best Supporting Actress in a Musical
>Tova Feldshuh losing Best Leading Actess in a Play
>Tonya Pinkins' knock-off "Rose's Turn" number.
>The entire opening number...with the exception of Hugh Jackman doing high-kicks. ![]()
>Wicked's performance. I love that show, and Defying Gravity is brilliant in person, but they really butchered that song on Sunday. I guess because it is such a long number?

Um...I think it's a longer SHOW in person.
