Many times on here the question pops up what movie would make a good musical but I don't really see many black films pop up on here so I was wondering if anyone knew of some that would be good as a stage musical.
My List:
"Jungle Fever"
"Deliver Us From EVA".......this could really work as a musical
"The Women of Brewster Place"
"The Temptations"
"Mahogany"
"Lady Sings The Blues"
"Savoy"
"Soul Food"
"Crooklyn"

Posted: 5/29/05 at 10:49pmDeliver us from Eva is the same as Taming of the Shrew. If they wanted a Taming of the Shrew related musical, Kiss me Kate's story line would have been of Taming of the Shrew.

DUFE? that's clever...i like that.
anyway, maybe it is my opinion, but i hated Deliver Us From Eva...I'd rather see LIFE (eddie murphy, martin lawrence) become a Broadway musical. That would be HILarious.

Life? hmmm
Coming to America would be grand.

Posted: 5/29/05 at 11:15pmHouse Party, would be the best choice. It could also fill in the hiphop musical category, but I'd only make three of the songs rap and the rest singing with hiphop beats, hiphop dancing, hiphop clothing, I realing think it could work. I also like the Coming To America idea.

My vote goes to "Coming to America". One of my faves!

P.S. I'd also like to see "What's Love Got to Do With It?" become a BWay show ... play or musical, I don't mind.

Posted: 5/30/05 at 2:05amMy first post on Bway World and its about Black movies thats can become musicals!!! I love it! Sorry to go with the flow but "Coming to America" as a musical would be hilarious! I love it already! We know "I'm your Queen to be!" would be in the score as well as a song called "Sexual Chocolate!" Any other song titles come to mind??? I kind of like "The royal penis is clean your highness!" Has a ring to it and could be a rousing uptempo. haha LOVE THIS MOVIE! Also love women of Brewster Place but I don't know how you could turn that into a musical. I haven't seen that movie in ages! Thanks Unmasked for posting this fun thread!

Sed A Tay!
Actually, Spike Lee's SCHOOL DAZE, which is already a musical, would be great on stage.
Also, UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT (Bill Cosby and Sideny Poitier - remember?) - It has sort of a modern "Guys and Dolls" theme.
Finally, does anyone remember A RAGE IN HARLEM? Gregory Hines, Forrest Whitaker and Robin Givens. IT had a love story, a crime story, and that freat"Undertaker's Ball" scene.

Mo' Better Blues would be great as a musical.
"A RAGE IN HARLEM" - was that the one about the girl that was trying to avoid the mob?
re: Black Movies and Musicals?????#21
Posted: 5/30/05 at 8:27amI wouldnt say School Daze was a musical, It only had 2 songs in it.

School Daze only had 2 songs in it?
No, it had quite a few more than that.
"I'm Building Me A Home" [sung over the opening credits]
"Be Alone Tonight" - performed by The Rays
"Straight and Nappy" - performed by The Wannabees and Gamma Rays
"Be One" - performed by Phyllis Hyman
"Da Butt" performed by E.U.
"I Can Only Be Me" - performed by Keith John
Although "School Daze" was never technically classified as a musical it still had more than 2 songs in the actual film.

give me a break with this thread...isn't it enough they're doing "on golden pond" and "his girl friday" with an all black cast, and they made "the honeymooners" into a "black" film? i'll say it again, where's the all white cast of "rasin in the sun" and "the piano lesson" and i think kristin chenoweth and michael crawford for "porgy and bess"...no?

Hahaha
"What's Love Got To Do With It"......that would be crazy...they could have songs like "Eat The Cake AnnaMae".
"Best Man" could be a good musical
"Brown Sugar" could be a Great intimate musical.
"Love and Basketball"
"The Wood"......that would be cool to see on stage.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH I know some really really really good ones...here look at these.
"How Stella Got Her Groove Back"
Starring: Brenda Braxton and Taye Diggs
That show would be AWSESOME
"Waiting To Exhale".....HELL YES...I would see it.
